Happy New Year everyone! It’s Sammy Award time - our annual fun poll on the storylines and characters that have kept us debating and speculating all year. Here is your chance to have your say on what has made you laugh out loud, moved you to tears or had you shouting at your radio.

It would be brilliant if the first poll on our new board was a bumper one, so please join in and vote on ‘The Sammies’ forum. You don’t have to vote in every category and multiple choices are allowed if you can’t decide on an outright winner. If you would like to nominate your own Sammy for actors or writers, please do. And feel free to add any comments too.

Voting is also taking place on Saddicts message board and the closing date is 31st January. I’ll post the results soon afterwards.

Here are the usual categories plus one with a Diamond Jubilee theme:

    Best Storyline
    Worst Storyline
    Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings
Who Made You Laugh Out Loud
    Who Made You Hiss
    Who Made You Purr
    Who Irritated You
    Most Promising Newcomer
    Who Had A Character Make-Over
Your Favourite Character(s) From The Last Sixty Years

See the thread below for some memory joggers for 2010.

    Here goes Vicky,

Best Storyline: Jazzer moving in with Harry. (I think I’m just drawn to comedic moments and Jazzer is one of my favourite characters.)

Worst Storyline: Helen’s obsession with the idea of becoming a mother and becoming pregnant in a blink of an eye.

Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings: Tony when he tried to make up for the ‘argument’ and discovered Helen already had a baby monitor.
Also Jill finding Phil had just died with the music playing in the background.
    Also Jolene losing Sid.

Who Made You Laugh: Jazzer. I love his observations especially in relation to Harry and Fallon.
Also Jenny when she discovered she was married to a Horrobin.

Who Made You Hiss: Helen for being awful to Tony.
Also Kate for extracting laptop after laptop from Brian and hurting all her children.

Who Made You Purr: Professor Lloyd for taking Kathy to one side and understanding her feelings following Sid’s death.

Who Irritated You: Oh gosh, Helen.

    Most Promising Newcomer: Baby Oscar.

Who Had A Character Make-Over: Jolene following the loss of Sid. She is mourning Sid’s sad loss, but she has lost so much energy and is now perpetually tired. Whereas Jill who lost Phil this year is far more chipper she’s being filmed cooking for example.

Your Favourite Character(s) From The Last Sixty Years: Love them all!

    Hi, Vicky!
Best storyline for me was Alice and Christopher getting married, with all the social repercussions! And it led to ny 'laugh out loud' moment when Jennifer said "I'm related to a Horrobin!"

Kate made me hiss! What a prize cow she is, she ought to be put in a byre at Brookfield.

The death of Phil tugged at my heart-strings.

Pip really, really irritated me, esp.when she was with Jude. And Lynda was at her worst during this year's (hilarious) panto rehearsals.

I purred when Jazzer sang so well at the talent show, and I purred again when Harry and Fallon first kissed. But now I'm frustrated, because Harry's cooled off!

Well I haven’t done this before either so here goes. Thought I’d escape from the trauma of recent days and think back…….

Best Storyline – Sid’s demise was done well – it affected so many other characters - and I’m sure the fall out from it will continue for a while yet.

Worst Storyline – Kenton getting “close” to Jolene….the prospect of more shower scenes was almost too much too bear!!

Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings – A few, (Kathy, Jamie, Fallon and Jolene after Sid….) but I think the winner was Jill breaking down after Phil’s death when she discovered he had fixed the heel on her shoe after all.

Who Made You Laugh Out Loud - agree with the above…Jennifer’s “ I’m related to a Horibin!!!!! was brilliant Aldridge snobbery at its absolute best!

Who Made You Hiss – Harry...I’m sure he’s going to do something unpleasant to somebody…..

Who Made You Purr – Jazzer. - .his turn of phrase is fabulous!

Who Irritated You – Helen Archer! Closely followed by Vicky and her veal campaign!

Most Promising Newcomer – I think it has to be Harry – he has great potential!

Who Had A Character Make-Over – Jamie - seems to have gone from being a nice boy to a bit of a hooligan!

Your Favourite Character(s) From The Last Sixty Years – couldn’t possible choose I’m afraid – I’ve been an addict for most of my lifetime and (cheesy as it is) – I’ve been frustrated, heartbroken, happy, outraged and always entertained by all of them over the years!! Long may it continue!!

Thanks Denny and Floradora - and Portia for making your Sammys debut. Yes, it is good to have something else to think about! So here are my votes too.

Best Storyline: Phil and Sid’s deaths
Phil because of the manner it was done, so sensitively and movingly; hearing Elgar's Dream of Gerontius
Sid because of the ripple effect it created

Worst Storyline: Helen’s donor pregnancy - Too easy, too quick. Of course we suspected - and now know - why! But at the time it was unbelievable
Kenton’s one-night stand - I felt the writers contrived this just to bring Kathy and Kenton’s relationship to a quick end. It didn’t ring true

    Tugged on heartstrings: Jolene

Laugh out loud: Jennifer - For her classic Horrobin remark!

    Hiss: Jude and Will

Purr: Robert - For trying to get through to Jamie

Irritating: Pip - Her romance, her exams, her university choices...

Promising newcomer: Harry - Whether for good or bad remains to be seen

Character make-over: Kathy - She became irrational, whiny and unreasonable

Favourites from 60 years: Polly Perks, Laura Archer, John Tregorran, Jethro Larkin (and others!) A couple of present characters too: Lynda and Kenton

All in all, I think this has been a very weak year for the Archers. As a 26 year old male I know I am not the typical audience, and my votes would probably refelect this...

Best Storyline - Jamie's reaction and antics after Sid's death and Robert's attempt to reach out to him. Shame it all just petered out with no real conclusion.

Worst Storyline - Joe Grundy getting sacked from the village shop for practically stealing, then the very next week he is such an upstanding citizen he gets picked for the flower and produce show! One of the countless examples of inconsistent writing there has been this year. I have about three storylines I would happily vote for here, but this one stood out for me. For the record, the Pip/Jude storyline was dragged out far too long and ended in a really predictable and unsatisfactory way so that would be my second choice.

Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings - Tony, when Helen was a total bitch to him.

Who Made You Laugh Out Loud - The Prof. Especially on the night of the pub quiz, asking ridiculously obscure questions about the Romans.

Who Made You Hiss - Harry, the golden boy of Ambridge. The angelic milkman who can do no wrong. I am just waiting for the day he turns psycho and does something unimaginably evil. I give it until May.

Who Made You Purr - Kenton, him and Nigel made an excellent double act. At least something good came out of his split with Kathy.

Who Irritated You - Ruairi and his ridiculous Irish robot voice. Though he has lived in Ambridge nearly all his life. Helen is a close second, her know-it-all attitude when pregnant, then her nastiness to Tony made her totally unlikable.

Most Promising Newcomer - Have there been any? Phoebe seems to be featured more prominently this year. There was lots of subtle depth and hidden meanings behind her voice, her acting is excellent, particularly during the storylines with Kate. I don't know if it counts, but it doesn't matter because Golden-boy-Harry will win this for sure.

Who Had A Character Make-Over - Pip, in fact, she had about three this year.

Your Favourite Character(s) From The Last Sixty Years - I have only been listening for a few years so I can't really say this with authority, but for me it is Joe Grundy. He always has something interesting going on, and is a very likeable character. This was recently showcased beautifully with the mistletoe storyline giving some much needed comic relief after Nigel's inexplicable decision to remove a flag from the top of a roof in the middle of the night on a windy day. Who could have seen that one coming?

Quote of the year: "AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" - Nigel

I realise that I haven't voted for the worst story, so just tagging on to my earlier reply, the worst story line was Helen's pregnancy. It was the worst for many reasons, including fact that all those of who agreed with Tony were maede to feel that we were in the wrong, plus the fact that Helen's selfish behaviour was rewarded by a successful birth while poor Nigel was tipped off the roof. (I realise this takes us into 2/1/11). And if I have to hear any more of Helen in 2011, while I'm mourning the loss of Nigel, that will be rubbing salt into the wound!

Oh yes! Can I tag on too! Although I voted for the Kenton and Jolene nonsense as the worst stortyline I didn't add on that Helen's pregnancy storyline was also fairly bad. Not the fcat she wanted a baby, it highlighted sperm donation, I don't need a man or any of that.....just the timing of it. Decide you want a baby one week, visit the clinic the next and ....bam...you're pregnant the next (well almost!) We all know there are waiting lists for such procedures and much heartache when first attempts fail (as they often do)...I'm all for a bit of dramatic licence but...please!! It could have been explored earlier and yes..after a bit of heartache and slightly more realistic timing etc, she could have finally had her healthy baby to celebrate the 60th anniversary which may just have endeared her a bit more to a rather large number of listeners!

(Don't want to add to your workload Vicky but I think multiple votes are allowed?!)

Hi Folks! This is my debut on the Sammy's although I have been a closet voter for years!

Best Storyline: Sid's death and the consequences - although not really enjoyable
Worst Storyline: VOA and his tent at lent
Tugged at Heartstrings: Jolene and Jill
LOL: Lots of Alice and Chris stuff - Brian and 'Alice's Starter Marriage'
Hiss: Will closely followed by whingeing Kathy
    Purr: Alice and Chris
    Irritated: Helen - all year!
Promising newcomer: has to be Harry
Character make-over: was going to say Jamie but ended up with Fallon. She is such a drip now and she used to be feisty with her ambitions, band etc
Favourite from last 60 years: I have been listening since I was a kid and love Lillian so it has to be her

    Thanks for doing this Vicky!

Here are some votes from one of my Archers penfriends who doesn't use the message board, but who loves to join in the voting each year

    Margaret's votes:

Best Storyline: Phil's death - very sensitively done and a fitting tribute to the Archrs longest-serving actor.

Setting up of the village shop. Very relevant to village life.

Worst Storyline: Kathy and Jamie. Felt very sorry for Jamie after losing his dad and could understand his resentments, but felt repercussions were too prolonged. I began to dread this storyline.

Tugged on Heartstrings: Jill and Jolene. Both gave convincing reactions. Albeit in different circumstances.

Laugh out loud: Double act of Jennifer and Susan and the so different opinions of their new relationship. Some classic lines delivered in their own inimitable style!

Hiss: Kate. Most selfish, inconsiderate mother. Hope she doesn't return!

Purr: Lynda and Robert's new relationship with baby Oscar and Coriander.

Irritating: Will. He is becoming too embittered despite having a lovely girlfriend in Nic.
Jim and Ruth are irritating too.

Promising Newcomer: Harry. Seems thoroughly pleasant and all he should be. hope this isn't a cover.

Character Make-over: Kathy. Felt she over-reacted to Sid's death (he had cheated on her!) at the expense of her relationship with Kenton.

Favourite Characters over 60 years: Nelson - loved his sardonic observations. Also the lynchpins - Dan, Doris, Phil and Jill. Don't feel the same about Ruth and David at the moment. Present day favourites - Nigel and Kenton.

These have just come to me via e-mail from avid fans and regular voters who are not message board users but usually join in.

    Hi from Penny and John,
Sorry these are so last minute, but better late than never. Hope they help swell the poll!
Best Storyline: Phil's death. A fitting and sensitive portrayal in light of the real-life sadness.
(This was a close contender with Alice and Christopher's surprise wedding as we loved Jennifer and Susan's conversations. Hopefully we'll hear a lot more from them in 2011, if only to relieve the present gloom.)

Worst Storyline: No question. Helen's donor pregnancy. It may be all sweetness and light at the moment, but Helen's unrealistically quick pregnancy, and her sudden maternal yearning, was unbelievable.

Laugh out loud: Jennifer and Susan's reaction to Alice and Christopher's marriage.

Tugged on Heartstrings: Jill. Losing her partner after so many years together.

Made us Purr: Nic. She's turning into a real asset to the Grundy family.

    Made us Hiss: Kate.

    Irritated us: Helen.

    Best Newcomer: Harry

Character Make-over: Kathy. Disliking her more by the day.

Favourites from 60 years: A tall order, so many. But we've picked out Doris as she was the one and only matriarch.

Thanks for asking us again. P&J

OK, here's my votes for the most prestigious awards ceremony of the year!

    BEST STORYLINE:
Kenton and Jolene - their getting together has been a real highlight over 2011.
    WORST STORYLINE:
Rich, the son of the late John Archer and I've got an awful feeling it will go on (and on and on and on).
    WHO TUGGED THE HEARTSTRINGS:
Freddie and Lily over Nigel's death especically Freddie riding out on Boxing Day (sob sob sob) in the hunt.
WHO MADE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD:
Always always Ruth - Oh Nooo not the slurry pit now!
    WHO MADE YOU HISS:
James and Leonie and their thing.
    WHO MADE YOU PURR:
Elona and her looking after Jack and Peggy so beautifully, but also Jazzer's singing of Have yourself a Merry little Christmas.
    WHO IRRITATED YOU:
Could come up with several but top of the pile has to be Helen - why couldn't she fall off the roof instead of the lovely Mr Pargetter?
    WHO HAD A CHARACTER MAKE-OVER:
Jamie seemed to have 2 - went from good boy to bad boy and then back to good boy.
    MOST PROMISING NEWCOMER:
Tracey - Can't wait to see what chaos ensues in the New Year!
    BEST COUPLE:
Ooh, Kenton and Jolene or Will and Nic, can't decide!
    60 YEARS:
Well I've only listened for 38 of those but I really like Nigel and I like David at the moment a lot because he's so real and normal but historically I liked Dan Archer (when did he die - about 1986 I think) but I also like Topper and currently Casper!
And does anyone remember Eddie Grundy and the whole crop circle thing? That was good! Back in 1990 something I think.
