Thank you everyone who took part in our Sammy Awards this year, hope you enjoyed casting your votes and having the opportunity to comment on last year’s storylines. Judging by the number of views, our votes and the diverse and amusing observations, are a popular read so I hope the results will be interesting too - it’s certainly the first time that the slurry pit has made it into The Sammys! I know there was some doubt if the Sammys would return this year, so I for one am glad to see they are back. I think I have most of my votes sorted, but another 'memory jogger' would be helpful for tightening it up. Also, are we allowed to include Ambridge Extra?
  • The Sammy Awards - Votes Please

Posted over 14 days ago.  Added 01/01/2012 17:29:02 by Vicky
Hi everyone and Happy New Year. As another year of storylines passes into the Ambridge archives, I’d like to invite you to take an indulgent look back and vote in our Sammy Awards. Named in honour of Peggy’s cat - and not to be taken too seriously - the Sammys are a unique opportunity to have your say on the year’s events and characters.

If you fancy joining in, please post in the ‘The Sammy Awards - Votes Please’ thread in The Sammys section on the Forum (you’ll see new votes by checking the number of messages alongside this heading on the Forum’s first page). If you can’t decide on an outright winner you can have several votes, or miss a category entirely. If you’d like to give a Sammy to particular actors or writers please do, and feel free to make comments - they are always so entertaining!

2011 was quite a year for couples: Alice and Chris adapting to married life, Kenton moving in with Jolene, the surprise liaison of Leonie and James, Pip and Spencer’s budding romance and the growing friendship of Christine and Jim - not to mention the ups and downs of other Ambridge twosomes - so this year I’ve made the extra category Best Couple.

You have all of January to vote and I’ll post the results in February. Have fun!

    Here are the categories

    Best Storyline
    Worst Storyline
    Who Tugged on Your Heartstrings
Who Made You Laugh Out Loud
    Who Made You Hiss
    Who Made You Purr
    Who Irritated You
    Who Had A Character Make-Over
    Most Promising Newcomer
    Best Couple

Thanks everyone who voted in the Sammy Awards. It's been a turbulent time for the programme and it would seem that the events of the sixtieth anniversary have overshadowed our voting, resulting in not as many participants this year. Some regular posters from the old AA board have disappeared too, which has also hit the Sammys. It could also be that after ten years, the Sammys may have become stale. If this is the case, I won’t mind if people wish this year’s to be the last. When I first had the idea of the Sammys, I never thought they would last this long. It’s been great fun doing them, so thank you to everyone who has joined in over the years.

Fifteen people have voted this year and their votes can be seen on the Sammys category on this board and the Sammys section on Saddicts website. Here are the results with a few of the interesting and entertaining comments.

    RESULTS

Best Storyline: Alice and Christopher’s surprise wedding

    Worst Storyline: Helen’s donor pregnancy

Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings: Jill losing Phil

Who Made You Laugh Out Loud: Jennifer and Susan’s exchanges

    Who Made You Hiss: Kate

Who Made You Purr: A tie between Nic and Peggy

    Who Irritated You: Helen

    Most Promising Newcomer: Harry

Who Had A Character Make-over: Kathy

Your Favourite Characters(s) From The Last Sixty Years: Dan and Doris (There were lots of favourites, from the past through to the present, but the combined votes for these two made them apt winners)

    SAMMY SNIPPETS

Alice and Christopher: How else would we have had the comic relief of Jennifer being related to a Horrobin; Aldridge snobbery at its absolute best. Jennifer and Susan: Some classic lines delivered in their own inimitable style

Phil’s death: Very well written; a fitting tribute to the Archers longest-serving actor; most moving storyline of the year; a sensitive portrayal in the light of a real-life sadness; I cried with Jill.

Sid’s death: The excellent ripple effect it created; the fall-out will continue for a while yet; Character makeover - Sid, after he died! Jolene: Convincing and touching; Kathy: She over-reacted; she’s become irrational and whiny; she deserves to be alone. Kathy and Jamie: Too prolonged - began to dread this storyline.

Helen’s pregnancy: Too easy and too quick; total implausibility combined with unpleasant listening; her sudden maternal yearning was unbelievable; she was awful to Tony.

Kate: What a prize cow she is; hope she doesn’t return; maliciously plotting. Pip and Jude: Their relationship was dragged out far too long. Fallon: She is such a drip, she used to be feisty with ambition; Nic: A real asset to the Grundy family; she stood up to Will. Joe: Sacked from the village shop, then made a judge of the flower show - inconsistent writing!

Jazzer: His turn of phrase is fabulous; I love his observations in relation to Harry. Vicky: Why wouldn’t Mike stand up to her? Brian: His one-liners floor me every time. Harry: Seems thoroughly pleasant; the angelic milkman who can do no wrong, I’m waiting for the day he turns psycho; is he good or evil? Patrick:Bland and boring. Kenton: A good father figure for the twins. Peggy: For telling Jennifer off for her snobbery; putting Kate straight! Ruairi: his ridiculous Irish robot voice.

Village Shop: Very relevant to village life; the pain of doing things by committee. Livestock Market: A real rooted business story.

Last Sixty Years: Doris, the one and only; Nelson: loved his sardonic observations; the lynch pins - Dan and Doris and Jill and Phil; The Archers will always be Walter Gabriel; Love them all!

    SAMMY SPECIAL

Patricia Greene and Buffy Davis for their portrayal of Jill and Jolene’s grief

    SAMMY SUNDRIES

Line of the Year: "Good grief, Brian, I’m related to a Horrobin!"
Favourite from Sixty Years - the Sunday morning monologue
    Character to disappear: Helen
Character to hear more of: Nigel!

Just a reminder to say voting closes in the Sammys on Monday 31st January - this is a gentle prod in case you've been too wrapped up in events at Lower Loxley - or just not got round to voting.

New votes have just come in and it would be great to have a few more under the "Vote Here For The Sammys" thread in the Sammys Category.

Can I just suggest that, if anyone does want to join in the voting, they put their votes under the Vote Here for The Sammy Awards heading? It's just that The Sammys Category will probably only allow twenty topics and if everyone votes separately it will mean we eventually lose The Sammy intro (with all the votes), the Sammy reminders and the Sammy ideas from the old board.

I realise, by replying in the Vote Here thread there's no indication whether new votes have arrived, but at least we get to keep everyone's votes on show.

Best storyline - Alice and Chris's surprise wedding. It provided some very funny lines from Jennifer, Susan, etc.
Worst storyline - Kate coming back to go to university and unsettling Phoebe at the same time.
Tugged on heartstrings - Jill when Phil died, and Jolene and Kathy when Sid died.
Laugh out loud - Jennifer's "Good grief Brian, I'm related to a Horrobin!"
    Hiss - Kate.
Purr - Peggy when she told Jennifer off about her snobbery. Nic helping with the turkeys and Clarrie's Christmas dinner.
Most Irritating character - Will, Leon.
Most promising newcomer - Harry Mason.
Character make-over - Kate being concerned about Phoebe all of a sudden.
Favourite characters from last 60 yrs - Walter, John and Carol Tregorran.
Special awards should go to both Jill and Jolene for portraying their grief after the loss of their respective husbands.

Many thanks for doing this again Vicky, and for all your hard work.

Happy New Year everyone! It’s Sammy Award time - our annual fun poll on the storylines and characters that have kept us debating and speculating all year. Here is your chance to have your say on what has made you laugh out loud, moved you to tears or had you shouting at your radio.

It would be brilliant if the first poll on our new board was a bumper one, so please join in and vote on ‘The Sammies’ forum. You don’t have to vote in every category and multiple choices are allowed if you can’t decide on an outright winner. If you would like to nominate your own Sammy for actors or writers, please do. And feel free to add any comments too.

Voting is also taking place on Saddicts message board and the closing date is 31st January. I’ll post the results soon afterwards.

Here are the usual categories plus one with a Diamond Jubilee theme:

    Best Storyline
    Worst Storyline
    Who Tugged On Your Heartstrings
Who Made You Laugh Out Loud
    Who Made You Hiss
    Who Made You Purr
    Who Irritated You
    Most Promising Newcomer
    Who Had A Character Make-Over
Your Favourite Character(s) From The Last Sixty Years

See the thread below for some memory joggers for 2010.

  • Sammy Memory Joggers for 2010

Posted over 14 days ago.  Added 01/01/2011 10:39:08 by Vicky
Here are some memory joggers for 2010, there are also ideas in the Sammy Nominations thread below.

It was the end of an era when Ambridge mourned the loss of Phil. Sid’s death not only devastated those close to him, but cast doubt on the future of The Bull. Pip had her heart broken by Jude, Leon left Annette in the lurch - and a decision to make. Alice and Chris had a surprise Las Vegas wedding, Tom had marriage plans, but Brenda was intent on a career. Lilian became close to Paul, Kathy and Kenton split, and Helen resolved to stay single. Emma’s happy news gave rise to brotherly friction; there were mixed reactions to Helen’s unorthodox pregnancy.

The Ambridge Community Shop opened for business. Borchester Land Enterprise planned a new livestock market, Amside Property Holdings was formed and Kenton got his café bar up and running. Bridge Farm held a Local Food Day, Brookfield had a Farm Sunday, a Save The Bull campaign was launched and Lower Loxley had a spectacular Deck The Hall extravaganza.

Matt’s prison term ended and he was de-tagged. Kate completed her first term at Felpersham University. Lilian was made a company director, Brenda found work in Leicester, but soon moved to Amside Holdings. Mike and Ed expanded their dairy herd, Vicky had plans for the bull calves and Eddie became a Livestock Handler. Neil was elected Chairman of the Parish Council. Eddie and Joe opened a campsite, Jamie helped out at the Golf Club, Nic was offered work as a barmaid and Susan and Vicky became dairy maids.

The Ambridge Who’s Got Talent Show ‘discovered’ Joshua, Jamie and Jazzer while the real Colin Dexter opened the Whodunnit Fete. A picnic celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Millennium Wood, Arkwright Lake gained a new bird hide, but a peregrine falcon platform on the church was turned down. The Flower and Produce Show appointed Joe as judge, there was Race Evening at the Village Hall, a Young Farmers’ Ball and a Golf Club Dinner.

Jim moved into Greenacres and held a Roman-themed house-warming, Harry rented Hillside flat and took Jazzer as lodger; Alan camped out for Lent. Peggy had computer lessons and renewed an old friendship, Jill celebrated her birthday in Bath and demonstrated her cooking skills on film. Susan acquired a tagine…

Kenton plotted for Bonfire Night; Lynda talent-spotted for Dick Whittington. Phil was remembered with Waiting for a Wonder on Advent Sunday. Jennifer and Brian enjoyed (endured?) Christmas Eve at Ambridge View and Elizabeth and Nigel planned a gathering of the clan at Lower Loxley…

Here are some of the comments made throughout this year. (Can't copy the poster details) Remember they are only suggestions. Real voting starts in January.

Best Storyline So far this year, I think the storyline surrounding Sid's death has made it a front-runner for the 'Best' category.
Jamie's grief at losing his Dad. Yes I second this, as it has had a "ripple effect" on so many people, relationships and situations.
    Best Line
Jenny "Would you like a drink Susan?"
Susan "It's only 5.30pm, bit early for me"
Jenny "I was going to put the kettle on!" in quelling tones.
Good grief, Brian. I'm related to a Horrobin!
    Tugged on Heartstrings
As much as I disliked Pip's behaviour towards her parents I'd pur Pip forward as well, I do feel sorry for her atthe end of the day, a hard leasson to learn, learnt the very hard way.....car crash waithing to happen!!
Jolene describing her grief. Jolene definitely deserves to be nominated.Such great acting by Buffy!
    Laugh out loud
Still laughing at what Jazzer said to Tom yesterday about "farming free-range teddy bears" if he listened to Vicky too much!...
    Laughter Lines
Neil to Susan re Alice and Chris upstairs - "Quality time - is that what they call it!?
Susan to Neil re Sabrina Thwaite - "She only knows how to count to ten - and that's when she's doing her manicure."
Alice to Chris - "Mum says the Brookfield kids have pizza in their DNA.
