Someone asked why they had to type the two Captcha words after logging in and making a comment

It's a method to prevent automated spam as you have to type in the words manually.

The site was flooded with spam messages selling goods and we had to take steps to control this. Such a shame. It's also why comments have to be pre-moderated.

These are methods increasingly used by social and commercial sites as spammers become evermore ingenious.

I can understand that the 'captcha' is necessary to deter spammers, Kathy, but it's very difficult to use---one of the words is clearly visible, but the one with the black splodge behind is almost impossible to get right. I'm squinting at my screen in frustration, not sure if my message will get through---how much worse must it be for Archers Addicts with eye problems?

Yes, I take your point Floradora. We had to put this in in a hurry to deal with the problem. It needs some more investigation
