  What on earth is going on? The Brookfield threats storyline is the least realistic of many recently. It is completely out of character with the Archers and what most listeners want from the program. If you have to write that sort of stuff then please keep it on Ambridge Extra and not in the Archers. Where are the people who should vet what is written with real life such as what the Police's involvement would be if these threats were really taking place. I'm sorry but you are just insulting our intelligence with this type of writing.

  Absolutely agree. Had to turn the last episode off and will not be listening to this evening's expected unbelievable farce. The actors appear to be deliberately sabotaging the programme by acting very badly and unlike themselves. The plot line is not credible, and it is insulting the intelligence of the audience to continue like this. Bring back the sophisticated programme which we all know and love - sorry - knew and loved.

  Remember, dear listener, that your new editor at the archers is "from Eastenders" and is keen to inject jeopardy to the story line in order for us to "root" more for the characters. I'm not sure about the transience of tv viewers but I tend to find that radio listeners in general have chosen to tune in and do NOT generally need jeopardy but for continuiety and minutiae. Obviously in this lawless Uk that we live in there are no Police.

  Wholehearted support for the post from 'J' The 'stand in Producer' has got it so wrong. One of the great strengths about the Archers is the normality of life. Village events, the odd spot of relationship problems, some humour mixed with sadness but certainly no big bang cliff hanger at the end of each show. If it continues then my off button will come in to play. No doubt it will be of little concern to the producers, controllers & whoever else runs the show to start to loose listeners. They will trot out their mantra 'we want to attract a new audience'. So it is hardly suprising that these creative geniuses feel this is best achieved by making the Archers just like every other tedious TV soap. Couple of points for the teenagers scripting the current story lines:  Our Police force are not a bunch of numpties It's winter in South Africa Try finishing off story lines like the reconciliation between Amy Alan and Usha. We need more than Amy turning up to a party saying 'Sorry'

  As an Archers fan for nealy 60 years I cant see why the BBC want to change a successful program into somethimg more like Eastenders. Can someone explain why? Assume new writes have no idea of the characters as so much lately has been contrary to the characters that have evolved. Brian C

  we all know the Archers has nothing to do with reality - so why do they want to try and introduce elements that reflect reality ..if that was the case there would have been jokes made and sniggering in the pub when Adam got together with Ian and as for the highly unlikely marriage of Alan and Usha ..and Jolene and Kenton ,isn't it just a bit too lazy to put the two together instead of if they wanted reality by getting her together with a beer rep or someone from outside the area ..and Nigel falling off the roof ,again ...highly unlikely so why all of a sudden this mad dash to introduce real life crime et al .It is not necessary ... and we really dont need it ...If we did we can take a walk into town and see the chewing gum on the pavement .

  Violence is not what I want to listen to on the Archers.Please bring the story line to a close as soon as possible.It leaves a sour taste in my mind that Ambridge should be crime free as there is enough crime in the world without adding it to the Archers.

  I too have listened to The Archers for many years and am also beginning to find the current storyline unacceptable. It is quite clear that Acting Editor John Yorke’s is alienating many loyal listeners with his blatant attempt to 'Eastendify' the style and pace of the programme. It is also clear from these postings, and from other articles I have read, that many Archers listeners don’t watch East Enders because they recognise it for what it is – an unbelievable and repetitive television soap designed to pull in a mass television audience. It would be good if we now had some confirmation that the programme will soon revert to the 'rhythms of everyday life' and that this experiment has failed and backfired. Archers listeners do not want their programme dumbed down and this should be recognised by the mandarins at the BBC. Like everything else, The Archers needs to evolve – but in ways that are both complimentary to the traditions of the programme and acceptable to its large listening audience. A bit of contrition from the BBC would not go amiss too.

  I am sick of hearing this violent storyline. The Archers was supposed to be an everyday story of country folk. It has been going down ever since Nigel was killed off (one of the best characters). Most annoying one? How about the home help from Eastern Europe? How about the girls' cricket story? How about less about the youf and more about established characters. Why has Jill turned inton such an annoying weoman?

  Apparently the Brookfield storyline was in place before John Yorke took over, so he is not bringing anything from EastEnders to that. The Archers has always had controversial - and violent storylines; Ambridge has a dossier of crimes and 'sensational' events going right back to when the programme began. And I don't think this present one has been any more menacing or unbelievable than a lot of them. I can remember when a young Adam Macy was kidnapped - how unbelievable was that! I don't think the programme can be accused of not having 'everyday' stories either. To be honest, I haven't been particuarly engaged by the trauma at Brookfield, but I'm really intrigued as to what will happen if Vicky is pregnant. There's loads of mileage in that!

  You may not want a response Vicky, but I do and I am sure others do too. In recent years British public service broadcasting (both BBC and Channel 4) has been dumbed down in an ever-increasing race to boost listening/viewers at the expense quality programming. If this is now the approach for The Archers, I for one would like to know as I will divert my listening elsewhere. As I said in my original posting, The Archers needs to evolve – but in ways that are both complimentary to the traditions of the programme and acceptable to its large listening audience.

  I'm bracing myself for the outrage when Linda Snell is abducted by a flying saucer. As a ufo contactee, I would find it sensible but the traditonalists would be up in arms about it for sure.

  Having given up on the Archers for a week or two as a result of the overdramatic Brookfield story I have tuned in again these last few days. A bit of a mistake - its just continuing with more overdramatic drama with Emma. I seriously dont care anymore and have lost interest in the characters and the storyline. How can we get the message to BBC : Will someone somewhere at BBC correct/re-balance the writing and editing of the Archers. You arent writing for a big Hollywood film or a TV soap drama so get back to doing 'The Archers'

  I am sorry but I have do disagree with most of you. I am finding the current story line gripping! I don't particularly want to listen to everyday stories of everyday people! Why do people find it so unbelievable? Does crime of this type not happen in the country? Do you want an idyllic Ambridge where the greatest excitement is the Flower Show or the village dance? As for last night's episodeI found it particularly fascinating; the pressure mounting on Emma to deny what she saw (if indeed she did), the bullying tactics of Tracey and the divided loyalties of Susan. I for one will keep listening.

  I agree with you joeybettany. If all that happened in TA is people drank lots of tea then it wouldn't have lasted 60 years. I think people have jumped on the EastEnders thing because of John York stepping in for a bit - but they must plan stories like that well in advance. By definition TA is a radio drama - there has to be a bit of drama from time to time!

  I've just listened to the latest episode - 23/07 and had to turn the volume down! Fifteen minutes of Emma, Tracy and Susan in hysterics, mixed between Fallon getting incredibly animated about her holdiay plans with Harry....."CALM DOWN DEARS!" and I'm a girl!

  I think I prefer the gentler humour of earlier years, where the cliffhanger would concern who painted their front the wrong colour.But I will keep listening. Can we please have more Lower Loxley.
