  • The Archers Counts

Added Friday 17 May 2013 by  Kate

I was pleased to hear RAJAR’s latest listening figures announced yesterday – 5.07 million is quite something when you think about it! I love the fact all those listeners are dispersed far and wide, but we make up a loose virtual community, anonymous but also secretly joined by our Archers addiction…

We’ve been having some great conversations with Archers fans lately. We spoke with a wonderful woman this week who had a hearty sense of humour. She moved to the UK from the Caribbean many years ago and used The Archers to help her pick up English. Decades later she is still addicted!

Last night, I was surprised to find myself in the middle of a lively debate about current stories at my local pub (which happens to be called The Old Bull – I love being able to say “Fancy a pint at The Bull?”!). Lilian has gone right down in one regular’s estimation and they can’t believe that Matt’s being so slow on the uptake, and apparently Darrell’s Brummy accent isn’t quite right!

I just spoke to one very dedicated listener who said that, thanks to podcasts, she never ever misses an episode. She told me that when she “pops it” (as she put it) in a hundred years (fingers crossed), she’ll need a radio in her coffin. Now that’s dedication!

Meanwhile, if you have a spare moment and fancy a laugh, listen to Listen Against (Series 2, episode 1) in which The Archers gets a cheeky mention. If you haven’t heard it before, Alice Arnold and Jon Holmes take a satirical look back over the last week of radio. This episode features an Archers convention in Las Vegas! (first mention 4 mins in)

Added Wednesday 17 April 2013 by  Kate

    Hello all,

Hope you’ve been enjoying recent storylines. Personally I’m on tenterhooks… Is Paul loosing the plot and will Matt discover Lilian’s betrayal? Will Tom be able to move on, and what beckons Brenda beyond the bright lights of Borsetshire? A little bird tells me there are excitements unlimited in this Friday’s episode, so be sure to tune in!

Sorry we’ve been quiet for a bit, but we’ve been v. busy here at AA-HQ. We managed to leave poor Jennie all alone for the week in which Vanessa Whitburn broke the news she was standing down as editor of The Archers – perfect timing! Fielding calls from the press as well as getting on with the usual demands of life at AA-HQ was no mean feat – I hope Jennie charges double time for doing more than her fair share!

We all had a fabulous time at The Edible Garden Show at Stoneleigh last month, where we met lots of fabulous Archers fans. We so enjoyed being able to put a face to the names of so many of our regulars, who we chat with and email but never normally get to see. We also enjoyed meeting a few gardening gurus such as the legendary Bob Flowerdew, passionate Alys Fowler and experimental James Wong. The only down side of the show was that the stalls were so fabulous we ended up emptying our own pockets for the sake of our gardens. Luckily we sold plenty of Archers goodies so had room for a chunky wooden veg trug, a garden sculpture/frame for climbing plants, and a terracotta rhubarb forcer, plus the inevitable plentiful supply of seed packets etc.etc. Now all we need is the weather…

In the meantime, keep on listening!

  • Message from Jake

Added Monday 11 March 2013 by  KathyPerks

This message today comes from Jake, who has the great good fortune, or misfortune depending on your outlook ;), of working in the Archers Addicts office!

Today at the AA headquarters, we’ve been gearing up for the Edible Garden Show! While checking through and counting our vast amount of stock for the show, there turned up some old memories from the Archers cruises with an unforgettable note to the actors telling them ‘you’re rehearsing in the Canary Cage’. The forerunner to tweeting? Just had to pause and take a moment to go out into the snow! A miniature blizzard has erupted outside the door, although probably not enough snow to bring Ambridge to a halt. Any tractor will get through it without a problem!

Now the Edible Garden Show is on the 15th-17th March and the Archers Addicts team will be there with goodies ranging from the Radio Drama Magnet to Archers wooden spoons! I will be joining the team and look forward to meeting the fans of this most prestigious show!

Now before I get back to work, let me take a moment to let you in on some secrets about what really goes on! I’ve been in this office for about 4 hours now, and you would be rather surprised with the conversations that go on! From incredibly poor puns, to conversations about what kind of tea you would compare Michael Bublé to!

    Bye for now, Jake.

  • Winter Wellies

Added Wednesday 23 January 2013 by  Kate

Well it's a winter wonderland out there - so pretty with the snow coming down in huge flakes. I feel very Ambridge this morning, as I came to work in my wellies! Could be fun getting home though as, like Lynda, I am on the trusty bicycle.

I had a pretty Ambridge evening last night too actually. The Mother-in-law invited us over for supper - she always prepares meals from The Archers Cookbook as it's her favourite! Last night we sampled some beautiful trout with 'Sabrina Thwaite's Creamed Leek Sauce' which was delicious. This was followed by 'Eva's Apfelkuchen' which is divine and, served warm with a blob of ice cream or creme fraiche, is the perfect thing for a cold wintery evening.

All this talk of food is making me hungry - time for a coffee I think. Wish I had a slice of 'Clarrie's Scrumpy and Cinnamon Cake' to go with it! Have you noticed that Lilian and Paul do nothing but eat? Well... not nothing exactly... but I eat like a horse and even I was put off at the thought of Eggs Benedict followed by a pub roast. I expect Lilian has to keep her strength up to maintain this double life of hers...

    Anyway, over and out. KW

P.S. If I've got your appetite going, we still have some copies of Jennifer Aldridge's Archers Cookbook Collection available - you get two books, an Archers spoon and a signed bookplate for £15.99. Yum.

Added Wednesday 16 January 2013 by  KathyPerks

There's a cold wind stirring in the Archers Addicts Office. We're trying to keep warm but it's hard in current weather conditions. However, as you can see my trusty staff know how to dress for the cold.I did point out that in previous times staff were expected to bring in their own coal but for the moment it appears to be just hot water bottles....

Anyway, we're all back and interested to see what 2013 will bring. At the moment we're planning our appearance at the Edible Gardens Show, (not a Dr Who Extravaganza with creeping monsters eating up our gardens!). We've extended the competition so you still have a chance to win FREE tickets - check out Gardens . We have one or two other event possibilities to explore so we'll keep you posted -

We're looking forward to hearing the new Clarrie, Heather Bell. Heather created the part originally and we'll be interviewing her for the next issue of The Ambridge Voice. By then she'll have been in studio and will have renewed some old friendships. It's unusual for actors to have the opportunity to work together over a long period of time, and this is one of the bonuses of belonging to The Archers. We share the good and bad times and having this unusual extended family is fun as well as very supportive.

Off now as my fingers are too cold to type! Hot chocolate required....

  • All change!

Added Tuesday 8 January 2013 by  KathyPerks

Those of us who thought Christmas was going to be the backdrop to a spectacular confrontation between Matt and Paul, were doomed to disappointment. However, surely it can only be a matter of time unless Lilian learns to put her phone on silent…

Christmas seems an age away now. We spent it in a large Devonian farm-house with no phone signal, wifi or telephone; the perfect hideaway for Lilian and Paul. At the foot of a Devonian hill so she could see Matt long before he got there and hide!

We’re thinking ahead to the Edible Gardens show, (which I persist in called Edible Gardeners – I’m not sure why and I’m not sure how tasty they would be). It’s on the 15th, 16th & 17th March at Stoneleigh, near Coventry. Trevor (Eddie) and I are going to be there all day on the 15th and he came over to AA headquarters for a chat about what we'll be doing. Whilst he was here I got him to sign some Valentine cards for love-sick swains to send their Archers addicted girl-friends. I know he’s not everyone’s Valentino but he has his own charm!

I've never seen Trevor quite look like this photo I took but he does remind me of a screen actor. Can you help?

Wonderful news about Tim Bentinck winning Celebrity Mastermind, and we’ve got some hot news about the new Clarrie – but you’ll have to wait for that until tomorrow. Love a good taster!

  • Christmas Cheer!

Added Wednesday 12 December 2012 by  Kate

Well I am taking a quick break from the Christmas madness to update you on the festive goings on at AA-HQ... Lovely Christmas cards are piling up around our mini Christmas tree on the window ledge. A huge red, green and gold bouquet of flowers arrived for us today from a lovely fan. We're so pleased you all enjoy The Archers and Archers Addicts - thank you for all your good wishes and here's to a fabulous 2013 in Ambridge.

I have given in and am wearing my santa hat as I type this, so Christmas simply must be on its way. The carols are blaring out from one of the computers - although we keep having to pause it every time the phone rings! And we have made the shocking discovery that one member of staff who is currently packing up your parcels really is a Christmas elf - she has the pointy ears to prove it!

We've had a few fun visitors lately including the delectable Sunny Ormonde (Lilian), wonderful Archers director (and so much more) Sue Wilson, and Trevor Harrison (Eddie). Trevor told us he went to see Graham Seed (Nigel) in the Mousetrap. Out for a post-show drink with Graham and another ex-Archers actor, Sam Barriscale (John), Trevor had a wobble when he realised he was sitting between two dead Archers! Tee hee!

Anyway, better go as the jobs are piling up. There's still time to finish up your Christmas shopping and we're offering FREE P&P on stocking fillers this week so now's the time to do it!

'Til next time, over and out. KW x

  • Strictly come Children in Need!

Added Friday 16 November 2012 by  KathyPerks

I’m looking forward to 30 seconds of fame tonight when I flag up The Archers V.I.P. studio visit being auctioned for Children in Need, on Midlands TV. Such a great cause, and it’s lovely to feel part of the huge effort made by so many people. The auction doesn’t finish until 18th November so there’s still time to put in for it if you fancy some fun alongside helping the children. We’re going to add in some Archers Addicts goodies too

We’re sad today as we've had to bid farewell to Ann, who has worked with us for seven years. She’s moving back to her family much further north than Ambridge, and will leave a large Ann gap to fill; plus a pile of paper clips, as she was paper clip Queen and we never lost a single sheet of valuable paper while she was here! We wish her and husband Brent the very best of luck.

I’ve been manning the phones this morning and I’m once again struck by all the different people who enjoy The Archers. Some lovely women's voices remind me of my Nan, then there's a harried husband buying for his wife, a generous wife buying gifts for her harried husband, a reverend, a doctor and a long distance lorry driver – love them all! I realise that listening and commenting on The Archers gives fans of the show the same pleasure I get from discussing the dancers on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Nothing better than a gin & tonic with ice and a slice and a good gossip. Enjoy yours!

  • Keep cosy!

Added Thursday 8 November 2012 by  Kate

Greetings fellow listeners (should I be concerned I’m beginning to sound like Jim?)

I hope you are well and keeping cosy now that the cold weather is here to stay. Inspired by the chilly winds, that flurry of snow last weekend, and a welcome delivery of our gorgeous new Archers Christmas Cards, we have spread a bit of Christmas to the Homepage and our lovely little Shop. Look out for snowflakes which have landed on sparkling new Archers goodies perfect for Christmas! Click SNOW to see a PDF of our latest Winter Wonderland emailer, complete with offer of the week!

I’m already feeling November slip away and I really wanted to get ahead with my Christmas shopping this year as we’re going to be so busy here at AA-HQ packing up all your Christmas presents! Still, I’m sure I say that every year… I plan to get snug with my laptop, make a lovely cup of tea, and shop to my heart’s content on the internet – beats crowds and cold any day!

Meanwhile, Lynda is trying to get all Ambridge in the festive mood as rehearsals continue... The will-they-won’t-they between Fallon and Rhys is driving me mad – can’t wait to get the mistletoe out! There’s certainly not much Christmas spirit at The Dower House yet, although I imagine a different kind of spirit is flowing freely (“It’s purely medicinal darling. Besides, I need something to whet my whistle; I’ve got a phone call to make…”).

Here at AA-HQ we’re finishing off another packed edition of The Ambridge Voice – see what happens when Shakespeare comes to Ambridge, make plans for an upcoming event, and share a very special vision of Ambridge… Delivered to your doorstep soon!

Added Wednesday 31 October 2012 by  KathyPerks

The great thing about recording is catching up with friends and having a good gossip! We’re as much in the dark about how the stories are going to develop as our listeners, so a hot topic was the outcome of the relationship between Lilian and Paul! Fling, affair, red herring, divorce? Ooh noo!

It was reassuring to know that Emerald O’Hanrahan is doing fine and not finding life as tough as Emma. On the contrary, Emerald is on a high and playing Belle in ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Northampton Royal & Derngate Theatre. I did suggest Ed and George for Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim but they’re cast……

Great that Stephen Kennedy,(Ian), has joined us on Twitter. He's been having fun playing God in Lyons - where else? Our Facebook group is going well too, with one or two members of cast popping in from time to time. Search for 'The Archers Addicts' if you're interested.

The other thing on our minds is who's going to play Clarrie. We know there's an audition list, and we also wonder whether Heather Bell who originated the part will be approached. That would be coming full circle!

Rumour also has it that a further Ambridge Extra series has been commissioned for 2013. I'm a latecomer to AE but I really enjoyed the last series and will have ear clamped to radio for the next one starting in December.

Had a chat with Tim Bentinck, (David), who’s been experiencing the ‘three buses coming at once’ with his appearances on Eggheads and Mastermind tucked under his belt, (we’ll let you know when he’s on TV), and now an offer of University Challenge from his alma mater, University of Anglia. Sadly that one won’t work out but at least he was asked.

Oh – and we did some work in studio as well, but that’s another story..

    Happy Halloween

  • Art meets The Archers

Added Friday 26 October 2012 by  Kate

I love the fact that The Archers crops up in all sorts of unexpected places. Rarely a week goes by without a cheeky little reference appearing on another Radio 4 programme, in the news or on the box. Last week on BBC 1’s Miranda, Stevie and Miranda resorted to humming The Archers theme tune to calm their nerves and/or nullify the perceived threat of a group of hoodies in their shop. I might try that next time I’m talking to someone who’s still angry that the scriptwriters killed off Nigel…

Usually an Archers reference comes in the form of a passing gag, but sometimes it gives you a little more pause for thought. Today I was sent a clip which highlights the significant place The Archers occupies in British culture. The programme is an icon so much bigger than the sum of its parts - a cultural yardstick if you will. Celebrated English artist, Grayson Perry, referred to The Archers yesterday as he opened the National Open Art Exhibition at the Prince's Foundation gallery, London. This is what he said:

“For me the moment we decided that art is mainstream was when Anthony Gormley’s Fourth Plinth Project cropped up on The Archers. I knew at that moment - when Lynda Snell embraced conceptual art - that we are now part of the mainstream and we should be celebrated as that and it’s a great part of our culture.”

I wonder whether he’s talking about The Archers or conceptual art at the end there?!

  • Ready, steady, cook!

Added Tuesday 16 October 2012 by  Kate

Well all I can say is I’m having a tasty autumn! I always take a gift when visiting friends and thought this time, for a change, I’d try some home made Florentines. So last week I opened up Jennifer Aldridge’s Archers’ Cookbook to page 26… The recipe is so easy and the results are completely delicious. Also, I had lots of fun melting the chocolate and getting covered in it – children would have a great time with this recipe! Just a word of warning though, the recipe claims to make twenty but I made well over thirty. They last for ages though and are the perfect accompaniment to a strong cup of coffee.

This weekend, I took a break from putting together the next Ambridge Voice and turned to page 90 to make ‘Clarrie’s Crunchy Chutney’. Someone in our offices was giving away free cookers, and it was just too good an opportunity to miss. This chutney is an uncooked one so it’s really easy to make. It made eight generous jars and looks delicious. I think they’ll make lovely hostess gifts this Christmas. I hope it’s as good as Clarrie’s! I think Joe would approve as I substituted the malt vinegar for cider vinegar – unfortunately (or should that be fortunately) not a Grundy vintage!

    Happy cooking!

  • Thank you Addicts!

Added Friday 5 October 2012 by  Kate

I just wanted to say a thank you to all our lovely Archers Addicts. I spoke to so many interesting people today - ordering Archers goodies and renewing their subscriptions - and everyone was a pleasure to talk to.

One woman told me of her horror at the thought Clarrie was leaving. Not realising Clarrie is going to be recast, she and her daughter invented gruesome ways for her to be written out, envisaging Clarrie falling into a vat of Pat's yoghurt, drowning in a huge barrel of Joe's cider, or sinking to the bottom of a megadairy slurry tank. Yuck. I think I'd take the cider!

I also spoke to a jolly chap who confessed he used to have a bit of a crush on Kathy Perks. We took a stroll down memory lane and he reminded me that a lot of the more straight-laced characters used to have a racy past, now long forgotten. Something about Peggy and John Tregorran down in the cellar of The Bull?... Before my time I'm afraid!

Another trip down memory lane came with a wonderful woman who used to live in Worcestershire and remembers the impressive Chateau Impney which stood in for Grey Gables in the past. She also described her father-in-law who farmed carrots (a real-life Tony Archer!). Apparently he would be furious if any reps came a-calling at a quarter to seven - the time The Archers used to be aired. We reminisced about the wonderful Dick Barton and Mrs Dale's Diaries (also before my time, but thank heavens for Listen Again).

So thank you for making my job so pleasurable. It's great to be able to share and celebrate the fun and drama of Ambridge with you all.

  • Thank you Janet Street-Porter!

Added Tuesday 2 October 2012 by  Kate

Part of the fun of working at AA is all the interesting people we get to talk to. We were phoned recently by a lovely young chap in his late twenties who assured me that The Archers has a big following among the younger crowd. Apparently he and his mates listen to The Archers while enjoying a drink before hitting the town on a Friday night! While clearly enjoying some of the racier storylines, this listener complimented the Archers team on the Jack Woolley/Alzheimer’s story. Working with people with dementia, he felt the topic had been sensitively handled and appreciated the way it unfolded over so many years.

Would you believe this chap found his way to us via Janet Street Porter? The ladies on Loose Women were rounding up events on the TV soaps when Janet declared that The Archers has the raciest stories of all, giving an imprecise synopsis of Adam’s liaison with Pawel, all of which ended in an imaginary clandestine clinch in a polytunnel! Still, it got him picking up the phone so we’re happy. We had a good old chinwag about recent events in Ambridge before he bought a subscription and some Archers goodies – commenting that he would be the envy of all his friends. Love it!

Anyway, have to go as the orders are rushing in now the new brochure is out. Our brand new Baking Range is flying off the shelf and you all seem to want one of our fabulous new extra large bone china Family Tree Mugs!

  • Never alone with The Archers!

Added Monday 17 September 2012 by  KathyPerks

I'm just back from a week tasting the delights of London instead of Ambridge, although The Archers still has a way of making its presence felt! On my way to Browns in St Martins Lane for supper who should I meet but Felicity Finch (Ruth), rushing to see Tamsin Greig (Debbie) in her West End hit ‘Jumpy’. Not even a moment to talk about Jamie! Soon back home and there’s a Christmas buzz as we finalise our new Christmas Snowglobe card, brochure and the Autumn issue of The Ambridge Voice.

I caught up with Dr Who and enjoyed the moment in the midst of his latest adventure when he denied all interest in aliens and adventures, and just wanted to get back to the Tardis for The Archers. We think that it’s listening to us that has kept him sane over the last 1200 years of his existence!

The Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics are becoming memories but now there are plenty of other events to look forward to (quite apart from the lovelinesses of  Halloween, November 5th and Christmas). What will Lynda’s Christmas Show be about this year? Are Jim and Christine doomed to be just good friends for ever, and what surprises lie in store over the Autumn months? Loving it! KP

  • Plumtastic!

Added Tuesday 28 August 2012 by  Kate

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at the Pershore Plum Festival this bank holiday Monday. We had a great day, despite those gloomy weather forecasts. Purple ballons bobbed gaily down the High Street, hundreds of classic cars assembled by the abbey, and there was a real buzz as everyone got ready for a special day celebrating the wonderful Pershore Plum.

We met some real characters and lots of fans of the show of course. One couple told us they are getting married at Hanbury Hall next year - the stately home used in publicity photogrpahs to represent Lower Loxley. At the wedding, their wine is going to be supplied by 'Underwoods'. Can you believe it? Although shame it's not Lower Loxley's own! There was another link to the Pargetters too. A lady told us, with a knowing nod and a wink, her claim to fame is that her twin grandchildren made wonderful baby noises for a very young Freddie and Lily Pargetter! Sweet.

We loved meeting everyone and seeing what products people like best. We sold out of the ever-popular Family Tree Tea towel, and we were pleased to see our brand new Jigsaw Magnet went down really well - available in the shop soon! The only downside to our pitch was that we were stationed right next to the cider tent - a bad idea when 'Eddie' (aka Trevor Harrison) is in town!

Having enjoyed my day out yesterday (complete with pork roll, local cider and huge cupcakes - yum!) came down to earth with a bang today - a wall of calendars delivered first thing this morning and only little me here to move them as others off and on hols. Still, beats the gym!

  • Seasonal delights

Added Thursday 23 August 2012 by  KathyPerks

So obviously as the MD of Archers Addicts I am a very important person puffing a large cigar and wheeling and dealing all day. Hmm. Why then was it that on a rainy day last week I received an emergency call from the office ‘Can you bring some plain flour for Herman?’ For the uninitiated Herman is a cake, a friendship cake to be exact, and he needs constant feeding. In many ways it's worse than having a cat - at least they go out occasionally. So off I went to the corner shop with my umbrella held high, (needless to say I didn’t have any plain flour), wondering if Alan Sugar got calls like this, and if he did what he would do about them...Anyway Matt Crawford eat your friendship heart out. Actually does he have any friends (or heart)? Discuss..

Suffice to say I was met with delight, the flour snatched away and another day at the office had begun.

As Kate says this is one of the best times of the year in AA headquarters, because for us it’s Christmas. We put together new merchandise and start dreaming up themes for our brochure. It’s good fun and we’ve got some lovely goodies and the all important festive chocs which we sample carefully on your behalf. So hope you’re having happy hols with even happier ones to come!

  • The countdown begins...

Added Wednesday 22 August 2012 by  Kate

Well we are busy little bees here at AA-HQ! Would you believe we are getting ready for Christmas? We’re embracing the unseasonal weather, as Jennie gets ordering stock for Christmas, turning AA-HQ into Santa’s grotto (just don’t call Ann an elf or she’ll get upset). We’ve just finished designing this year’s special Archers Christmas Card which is very sweet – we hope you like it – and now it’s onto the Winter Brochure. Only 124 days ‘til Christmas - unbelievable! (To keep a count, check out the Christmas Clock).

Meanwhile, it’s a nice time of year for us as the brand new products we’ve worked hard to perfect start coming in. We’re all huge fans of the Great British Bake Off, so we’re particularly looking forward to seeing the new ‘Baking with The Archers’ range - it's gorgeous! Plus we’ve got other goodies on their way, including a new fine bone china mug, and an innovative new magnet…

I’m looking forward to the Pershore Plum Festival this bank holiday Monday. We’ll be selling our Archers goodies for fabulous prices and a couple of the cast will be keeping us company, so come and have a coffee and a chat with us! I’m looking forward to browsing the Farmers’ Market which I’ve heard is completely delicious. I’ve also heard about teddy bears abseiling from the church tower which sounds intriguing – almost as crazy as when Alan Franks did the same off the steeple of St Stephens! I wonder if we could get one of our Archers Teds up there? Hope you can join us.

Added Friday 20 July 2012 by  Kate

I enjoyed a touch of Ambridge on my day off this week, despite being something of a townie. Mr. W and I were on a mission to double the size of a very special chicken coop. We discovered (tucked away behind a residential street and a busy main road), a little oasis of which Lynda would be proud. Like stepping into the tardis, we opened the door on a sprawling garden with pond, lawn, allotments, orchard and beehives! Having rescued some battery hens, the community gardeners (of which my mother-in-law is one) were concerned that their new bijou residence was a bit too bijou! Apart from a small hold up when we went to get more chicken wire - would you believe a huge red 'Archers' low loader turned into the farm supply shop before us, blocking the way! - all went well and the chickens are thrilled with their new patch. Plus Mr.W and I have half a dozen beautiful organic eggs which will make a lovely carbonara for supper tonight. Win win I say!

Meanwhile, the sun is trying to shine, although it's not very persuasive. Still, we're trying to brighten your summer with some fun offers for July - including free postage and packing on some of our little gems plus money off other favourite items. • The perils of rural life!

Added Tuesday 10 July 2012 by  Jennie

In true Ambridge style, I was en route for my pre work swim this morning when I was delayed getting out of our village by a flock of sheep careering along the lane towards me!  I managed to pull over as they went this way and that around my car whilst I waited for the farmer to catch up and eventually could move on.  Had a quick chat with the farmer, as that's the only time we see each other is when he is moving the sheep, and he confided he was a bit concerned the sheep may have tried to climb over my little sports car, rather than going around it!  Luckily for me it was all fine, just a bit delayed getting to the pool.

It did remind me of a hilarious occasion last summer.  I was cycling to work that morning (we’re a healthy lot here at AAHQ – Ann walks in, Kate cycles across town every day and I occasionally cycle from my village a few miles away – but I’m a bit of a fair weather cyclist!) when I was flagged down by the farmer’s wife who didn’t recognise me in my cycling gear (hopefully no one else does either)!  They were moving their sheep so we had a chat whilst the flock darted through the village.  Over eight hours later I was coming back into the village to see her standing in much the same spot. ‘Have you been there all day??’ I bellowed ‘No of course not, but now we’re moving the cows – they’re right behind you! Be quick!’ I cycled for all my worth, even up a bit of a hill, to get to my driveway and out of the way.  Cows move a lot quicker than sheep - and are much bigger!  Safely home I let my self in and breathed a sigh of relief. Then I heard a rumbling outside.  I peered through the window expecting to see the cows rush by the end of the drive.  Imagine then my surprise to see them running around my garden!  Up the drive they came, around the back of the house, up the side past the patio and back along the front to the drive, to run around again!  The poor old farmer was vainly standing in front of them waving his arms trying to get them to stop and out of the garden.  Eventually all was quiet and they were gone leaving a few hoof marks behind but no harm done and luckily no complimentary manure.

Made me wander what else goes on whilst I’m away from home…? Can you imagine Lynda coming face to face with Adam’s sprinting sheep on her bicycle? Or the devastation following Brookfield’s cows playing havoc around the gardens of Ambridge just before Britain in Bloom judging!  Mind you they’ve had their own experiences with running bullocks of late….

I’m sure you can understand why I’ve given up cycling for now and am sticking with swimming first thing in the morning.  Ah village life – you can’t beat it!  JE

  • A sense of community

Added Monday 2 July 2012 by  Kate

Well July is here and we can hardly believe it – especially as the temperature plummets and the rain continues to pour. Oh well, at least we don’t have to worry about hose pipe bans and drought!

We were very lucky with the weather on Saturday as the sun shone on our little local street party. It was a very Ambridge affair, with bunting strewn houses, mismatched chairs and tables and, of course, the obligatory tombola. The spit roast made a truly scrumptious lunch – even better than Gourmet Grills. The ice cream van played its jolly tune and plastered the children’s faces in delighted grins, as well as smudges of chocolate sauce. These culinary delights were followed by tea and homemade cakes that would’ve satisfied even Lynda’s critical gaze and made Clarrie green with envy. Delicious! For those who still had the energy, fun and games were to be had at our mini-Olympics… I’m not sure Kenton realises what he has let himself in for… Chaos!

As well as having a lovely day, the street party highlighted the wonderful sense of community you can have on a street like ours, as well as a traditional little village like Ambridge. As with Ambridge’s get-togethers, the party also gave everyone a wonderful opportunity to catch up on all the latest gossip! Afterall, isn’t that at the heart of all close-knit communities? It’s certainly why we all listen to The Archers!

  • Goodies for Father's Day!

Added Tuesday 12 June 2012 by  Kate

As things continue to get darker over at Brookfield and the clouds glower overhead, we are sunny here at AA-HQ! With the office to myself yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed catching up on the latest omnibus. I know some people are getting a bit twitchy about John Yorke's influence but, as Hedli reminded us in the last blog, drama is nothing new to The Archers. I for one am enjoying the tension at Brookfield. I think The Archers is the perfect platform for these sort of stories, giving them the room to breathe and evolve over time. Spooky!

To take David's mind off his troubles, we've put together some irresistable treats for Father's Day, including special card signed by buxom barmaid, Jolene, and our brand new 'Spot The Archer' Coaster with smashing man-size mug! Take a look at a PDF version of our latest update - click DAD. I wonder who is Ambridge's no.1 dad - ever patient Robert, the keen Ed Grundy, encouraging Alistair, or businessman Brian? Talking of dads, surely all Alan wants for Father's Day is some peace and quiet - when will the feuding end?!

I've just had the proofs through for the Summer edition of The Ambridge Voice - very exciting! We've got lots of fun for you this quarter, with top tips for gardeners (yes Lynda, we mean you), a brush with royality, and an interview with acting Editor John Yorke. It'll be hitting your doormats at the end of this month so keep an eye out.

In the meantime, happy listening! KW x

  • The darker side of Ambridge!

Added Wednesday 6 June 2012 by  KathyPerks

Quite an upset with articles in next week's Radio Times and yesterday's Guardian featuring acting editor of The Archers, John Yorke, and the darker side of Ambridge! It seemed that John was advocating more drama along the lines of TV soap and all our Addicts were up in arms, fearful that the familiar village of Ambridge would become a seething mix of Twilight, EastEnders and the Stepford Wives. Hang on ‘though – don’t we have the ghost of the drummer boy, the Horrobins and Jennifer Aldridge? Only joking!

John wasn’t joking and what he says is to the point. When he talks of the darker side of Ambridge he’s describing the current Brookfield storyline with David and Ruth being stalked by Adam’s attackers. And he goes on to say ‘But you can only afford to do something like this about once a year. Otherwise it would get implausible. The strength of The Archers is in its detail. The seasonal rhythms of agriculture, the floral competition – those things are vital.’ So he does understand us! We also have to accept that our 'cosy' soap often features gritty stories - Ruth's cancer, Kathy's rape and Brian's philandering to name just a few. It's what gives the series its cutting edge as well as the funnier quirkier and more soothing storylines.

And if you want to know more about  what John thinks of The Archers and his job as acting editor you’ll be able to read our behind the scenes interview with him in the Summer issue of The Ambridge Voice’ out at the end of June. Tell you what ‘though, I’ve found him a charmer with a great sense of humour!

  • Have a Jubilant Jubilee!

Added Thursday 31 May 2012 by  Kate

Well I was delayed on my cycle to AA-HQ this morning, getting stuck behind a smart and very shiny red combine harvester. It looked slightly incongrous in a queue of traffic in the middle of town, and I was quite surprised to see it whizz through a red light - cheeky! The sort of move Brian Aldridge might pull...

The adventures didn't end there as, once I got to the canal, I saw something odd in the water. Wheeling the bike back I saw a poor old eel floating along with half a fish poking out of his mouth. At least he thought he was getting a good last supper - I wonder what would Lynda make of it?

Anyway, back to Archers business... We're busy working up our new kitchen range which is going to be lovely, and the next edition of The Ambridge Voice is being designed as I type. Plus, we're celebrating the special Jubilee weekend with that other brilliant British institution - The Archers! Click Jubilation to view our latest Jubilee Emailer as a PDF.

I've got my red, white and blue frock ready for a Jubilee party and Jennie's village has all sorts of events planned including a duck race - love it - so Ambridge! Whatever you're doing this Jubilee Weekend, I hope it goes well and, for a little light relief, don't forget you can always tune in to The Archers!

The interesting calls we receive here at AA-HQ really keep us on our toes! They cover a wide variety of topics including overseas callers who want to catch up on missed episodes, enquiries into how to buy a subscription for someone or how to get a cameo part in The Archers (yes, truly!), and curiously obscure queries regarding stories and characters long since gone.

I spoke to a lovely lady today who simply phoned to tell us that The Archers is her favourite programme and she loves the current storylines. Having listened for years, my caller admitted she was getting on a bit, but a spring chicken compared to Ambridge matriarch Peggy Woolley. We decided that Peggy is wonderful and sharp as a tack, Amy needs to grow up, Alan must stop spoiling her and Lynda needs to keep on doing exactly what she does best - annoying most of Ambridge and getting things done.

The joy of conversations like this is that, while we all face unsolvable problems in our work and home lives, we can always put the world to rights in Ambridge. Time for another cup of tea...

Added Wednesday 16 May 2012 by  Kate

Hello happy listeners everywhere, or are you happy? Many of you are troubled by events at the Vicarage where Alan is behaving in a very ungodly fashion I must say, and as for Amy...

Oh well, at least we have the Jubilee and Britain in Bloom to look forward to and lighten our hearts. I'm enjoying the poppies and aquilegia that are springing up all over my garden at the moment... unfortunately they don't fit in with Ambridge's current theme! All this talk of gardening has got us very excited here at AA-HQ and we've managed to get a top notch Radio 4 gardening guru to contribute to the next issue of The Voice. Curious? You'll just have to wait and see who it is...

In the meantime, it looks as though space invaders have taken over the website. Added Thursday 29 March 2012 by  Kate

Well thank you everyone for keeping us all busy here at AA-HQ!

This is normally a quiet time for us - a chance to devise some lovely new Archers goodies and take stock of the year ahead - but you lot are loving our new Collectibles category in the Shop. We only got it up and running on Monday and we have already sold out of our gorgeous Ambridge Map Mugs, but fear not, there are still Archers treasures to be found (look out for our Little Gem icon). My personal favourite is the 'Ambridge a la Bayeux' Print (left) - it's such a witty and unusual item. When I was photographing it, my husband thought it was so lovely we should keep it up on the wall!

Meanwhile, Spring is in the air and the Spring edition of The Ambridge Voice is landing on doormats all over the UK - and further afield too. I've spoken to several people this week ringing to change their addresses. They were all moving house with a little trepidation and were pleased to be taking the rolling hills and compelling gossip of Ambridge with them. I love that fact that, wherever you are in the world, The Archers feels like home.

So happy listening until next time. KW

P.S. I just sold the last XL Cider Club T-shirt, so if you fancy a medium or large I recommend you buy now to avoid disappointment!

  • Ambridge Voice Extra - read all about it!

Added Friday 23 March 2012 by  KathyPerks

It’s a wonderful moment when The Ambridge Voice is completed and whisked off to our fulfilment house! There are so many different processes involved that sometimes we wonder if it will ever happen. Each quarter Kate (see below) and I discuss what stories we want to cover, wondering how we’re going to fill the pages with fresh material. Each quarter we are amazed at how much we have. Stories range from those about the programme and the research involved, to the characters and the actors who play them, the production team, farming today, mentions of The Archers in the press, and of course a steady input from of our Addicts who have their own tales to tell. Well, you know what we write about!

    Kate Wood Editor Ambridge Voice

It’s slowly dawned upon us that when we edit the copy we often have to cut out interesting pieces, or drastically reduce articles simply because there is no room for all of them. So, with the aid of the wonders of modern technology we have been able to put together an extra couple of pages online for our subscribers. We're calling it 'Ambridge Voice Extra'. It’s exciting! Just click subscribers on the top right of your screen on the Home Page and take it from there.

Anyway, when your copy of the Spring issue of The Ambridge Voice lands on your doormat over the next few days, know it was put together with love!

  • The Archers - an influence for the good or the bad?

Added Tuesday 13 March 2012 by  KathyPerks

Some of the storylines in The Archers can have an impact. This was brought home to me shortly after Kathy became pregnant, quite old at 40 plus, so she had an amniocentesis test. All fine, except that in real life I ran into a woman I recognised from when we picked up our children from school together. 'What a coincidence!' she exclaimed. 'I've been listening to The Archers and I wasn't sure whether or not to have the amnio test and your story helped me make up my mind to go ahead.' Slightly scary as there are always pros and cons about these things, and I would hate it if the story had persuaded her to make the wrong decision.

However, I was cheered by a trip down Memory Lane which showed a more inocuous influence! We were reminiscing about German au pair Eva Lenz on The Archers Addicts Facebook group, and I told them when I played the nubile Eva she used to rush about crying 'I do it myself", but we could never work out what she was actually doing. 'I know' posted one of the group. 'She made instant coffee by adding some cold water to the coffee and stirring it before adding the hot water etc. She said it made it taste more like real coffee. I still make instant coffee that way! I've just checked the dates and Eva was around from 1978 to 1980; as I was a poverty stricken student in '78 and '79, I can only think that I was eager for tips on ways to make my food and drink seem better than it was! And that's how I've done it ever since.'

    Who says we're just a light-weight soap?!

  • Spring is sprung – especially for Mums everywhere!

Added Monday 5 March 2012 by  Jennie

At last March is here and the deep dark winter days over – I always love March as the blossom starts to appear on the trees, primroses light up my garden and the first daffodils make an entrance.  Also my lovely Mum has her birthday in March so a special reason to celebrate.  With Mother’s Day around the corner (Sunday 18th if you haven’t got it in your diary yet) it’s time to spoil all our Mums!

Here at AA HQ we’ve taken the time to put together some special gifts for Mothering Sunday to make it easier to spoil our special Mums!  ‘Tea Time with The Archers – and your Mum’ combines our brightest tea towel, prettiest magenta mug and a vintage card signed by a surprise someone from The Archers!  All you need to do is put the kettle on!

If a jigsaw is more the thing then our Special Puzzle Selection includes the Brookfield 1000 piece jigsaw, green welly boot key ring and a beautiful bone china mug with the dum di dum theme tune emblazoned in spring like colours.  Both these gift sets include postage and packing so you don’t have to worry about any hidden extras, apart from supplying a big hug as well.

Did you know that when you order from the on line shop you can have your gift delivered directly to your Mum – or anywhere else, and you can add your own special message which will be handwritten on a unique Archers postcard? All part of the service!

And if none of these things are quite for your own Mum you can always just add one of the Vintage signed cards to any gift – perfect!

So I have Mothers Day all sorted now just have to find something for my Mum’s birthday as well…..

This has made me think of the Mothers in Ambridge and what they would like for Mothers Day – Ruth just wants her cows to stay, Pat needs some help in the dairy, Elizabeth just hopes she is doing the right thing with her youngters, newly wed Nic is happy enough, although Emma would like to have a ring on her finger too and dear old Clarrie is just so happy to be back in the fold at Bridge Farm helping in the dairy with all forgiven that she won’t worry if those too worrying boys of hers forget all together! Phew!!

Have a great day if you are a Mum and if you have a Mum spoil her rotten!  JE

  • Matching Pairs!

Added Saturday 25 February 2012 by  KathyPerks

Well, there's a turn up for the books! There's a problem with two Berts in our cast list, (Bert Fry and Bert Horrobin), so to avoid confusion the Radio Times is going to list one as Bert F, and the other Bert H. So now we're just missing Bert G!

It reminds me of some of the other name doubles, and you no doubt can think of some yourselves. There's Peggy Archer who married two Jacks - Jack Archer and Jack Woolley, and her mother Mrs Perkins managed to marry two men with the same surname, (perhaps it's a family thing). There are also certain dates on the calendar which attract Ambridge events while others are blank. Perhaps Jim could work out the statistical probabilities when he's not doing his crossword...

We've been having a trip down Memory Lane, clearing out cupboards and boxes and discovering Archers treasures. We'll be putting our finds into the Village Shop and you'll get a chance to share our nostalgia if you're long term members of Archers Addicts, or check out some of our past creations if you're new to us. We're also looking into the possibility of a small fan club gathering in the Autumn - I'll keep you posted!

  • Bullseye!

Added Friday 17 February 2012 by  KathyPerks

February, grey and dismal. Nice time to turn on the radio and be transformed to other worlds. People often ask whether or not The Archers shoud be turned into a television series. I suppose the nearest was Tony Hancock's famous 'Bowmans' sketch in the nineteen sixties. Says Wikipedia, 'Hancock plays Joshua Merriweather, a parody of the iconic Walter Gabriel. He annoys the other actors and producers so much they kill off his character, only to find the audience hold the character in greater affection than they had thought'. So the BBC has to resurrect his character and they do this cleverly by bringing in Joshua's long-lost twin brother, played by Hancock of course, and I seem to remember that most of the village disappear down a disused mine shaft! Oooh noooo!

Now of course we have Emmerdale, and no doubt as with all soaps the actors go in fear of toppling off roofs, falling down mine shafts, or sailing into the sunset never to return. In Ambridge the dread words are 'New Zealand' or 'Australia' where we appear to have a penal colony of disused Archers characters! However, there are very few acting jobs that employ you for several decades as The Archers does - or indeed enable you to make lifelong friends, sharing all those normal milestones such as falling in love, getting married, buying houses, changing partners, having babies, divorces, not necessarily in that order of course . This is the fun part of belonging to The Archers, however long it lasts!

  • Yes Graham Seed!

Added Wednesday 8 February 2012 by  Kate

Went to see Yes, Prime Minister last night. It was a real romp! The night started well as we approached our seats only to find two ladies sitting in them. We all checked our tickets and confirmed we were seats five and six, so confusion reigned until my husband pointed out that the ladies were in the wrong theatre! They were supposed to be watching Nora, Ingmar Bergman’s dark and disconsolate interpretation of Ibsen’s The Doll’s House – rather a contrast to what was in store for us!

A dishevelled Graham Seed swept onto the stage as Jim Hacker and was a whirling dervish throughout. Indecision gave way to blind panic as a moral dilemma span out of control, but the PM’s trusty aides were close at hand to guide him through: Bernard and Humphrey, who we know so well, and the sparky Claire Sutton, Hacker’s special policy advisor. Gone was the calm and jocular Nigel with whom we are so familiar, and in his place was a panicky PM, crippled by uncertainty and going to pieces as the plot span into farce.

It’s a dynamic production written by original Yes, Minister writers, Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn. The format and tone is familiar to fans of the TV show, but the content has been given a spring clean, brought up to date with contemporary references to the coalition, European debt and global warming – plus a very cheeky impersonation of Jeremy Paxman! The audience loved it and, while the pace was a little erratic, you’d have to be made out of stone not to laugh out loud.

    Over & out. KW

P.S. Look out for the Radio 4 reference – bit of a wink to those in the know.

  • Simon Drew

Added Friday 3 February 2012 by  KathyPerks

I first met Simon at the very first County Living Fair at Islington, more years ago than I care to remember. I was making for our stand with a pile of 'The Bull' sweaters, (quite snazzy in navy blue and white), when I heard someone exclaim 'Not The Archers!' I looked up and saw a beautifully bearded aparition with great earrings and eccentric appearance. Loved him at first sight - especially the earrings as they're a weakness of mine. We had a chat and I told him all about Archers Addicts, about a year old at that point, and off he went. Two minutes later he reappeared with a sketch for the brilliant first mug he designed for us 'Fallen Archers'. Since then we've had 'Underneath The Archers', 'I think therefore I Ambridge', Nelson's Swine Bar', and our 'Spot The Archers Character' mug and card' - to be recommended when you have an idle moment. The mug is one of our best sellers and you can get the card signed by 'Jolene' herself for Valentine's Day.

Why am I thinking Simon Drew? Well, we're going to see him at the Spring Fair and he sent me this great quote "If Sherlock can survive a fall from a building, why not Nigel?' Why not indeed!

    Love it - and him!

  • Crossed wires!

Added Thursday 26 January 2012 by  Kate

    Hello all,

Well we've had a productive morning. Our lovely techie came in to entertain us (!) and improve some bits and bobs on the website. It's only when you pull it apart do you realise what a complex thing this website is with Shop, Comments, Forum, On-line Ambridge Voice, News - it's like an Archers octopus! I think we could have done with some of Jim's pragmatism, Lynda taking minutes, and Jill's eye for good customer service (and some of her tea and cakes of course). The last person we'd want at a meeting would be Vicky who would no doubt paint the site pink and take over completely!

Meanwhile, AA's Jennie (who lives in a little village like Ambridge) has lost all broadband so is having to cope with no email or internet, and yesterday the broadband even went at the main reception here at AA-HQ. What an earth is happening - is Ambridge real after all?

    Hello lovely listeners,

I hope you are all well and enjoying The Archers at the mo. Brian gets a bit hot under the collar next week, so if you like hearing him squirm (rather than making other people squirm) be sure to tune in!

All's tickety-boo here at AA-HQ. We've been in touch with the lovely Sunny Ormonde (Lilian) and Trevor Harrison (Eddie) to sign some specially produced cards for our Valentine Special - to be anounced next week! Watch this space...

Although it's grey and raining outside, it's as sunny as ever in our cosy little office and we are looking ahead to spring. With the Spring Fair at the beginning of February, we're racking our brains for fabulous new merchandise ideas. Do let us know if you have a great idea for an Archers product and we'll see if we can find a supplier! Click 'Contact' (top right) or post your ideas on the Forum.

    Meanwhile, happy listening! KW

  • Detox and Retox – with The Archers!

Added Friday 6 January 2012 by  Jennie

I’m just back from a glorious week in the wilds of West Cornwall – my regular week away after Christmas to spend some time by the sea and just taking deep breaths and R-E-L-A-Xing!

There is nothing like winter walks to detox your mind! Walking by the sea in the wind with glorious views blows away the cobwebs – then of course one has to find a suitable pub or café to retox with a local brew or clotted cream teas (and maybe both)!

On one such walk this week with my husband we were buffeted by strong winds high up on the coastal footpath with a deep turquoise and white boiling sea below us – and not another soul in sight! Bliss! We were a little south of Lands End on the very western tip of the country. After a few miles we turned in land to find our way back to our starting point across country, and found a sign directing us to The Apple Tree Café.  Not expecting it to be open we were amazed to find a thriving busy place in the middle of nowhere!  We feasted on leek, potato and apple soup, nut pate and toasted homemade sourdough – and even had a delicious espresso!  One of the amazing things about the Apple Café apart from the delicious food, are their regular activities – there are monthly Bollywood banquets, weekly knitting and chatting but most impressive – Breakfast with The Archers omnibus every Sunday!  How fantastic!

So should you find yourself in the wilds of Penwith with a need for some company with your weekly Archers fix, as well as a splendid Cornish breakfast you know where to head! The whole idea was dreamt up by the lovely Helen (right, with Jo on the left) who runs the place and does much of the baking – she really should be in Ambridge! Where will you be this Sunday morning?  I’ll be dreaming of a lovely coastal walk and Helen’s yummy sourdough until I get back there!

Find The Apple Tree Café between Sennen and Lands End just off the A30 – tell Helen we sent you! JE

  • Prelude to Christmas

Added Sunday 18 December 2011 by  KathyPerks

Holy Trinity Church in Stratford upon Avon last night was a magic place to be. Candles flickered, the choir sang, and Leon and shared our Christmas poems nobly supported by family and friends. There was an Ambridge moment when my microphone clip lost its way and the microphone fell onto the floor! Leon rose nobly to the occasion and scooped up the wire and clipped everything back in place. Of course as the wire was now on the outside of my dress the skirt was dragged up so that I looked like a cabaret dancer. Fortunately we had reached the fun poems so it wasn't too incongruous. It put me in mind of a tale about Dame Sybil Thorndike. She was centre stage and declaiming when the elastic in her pants snapped and they fell to the floor. Hardly pausing our doughty dame simply stepped out of them and kicked them behind a handy sofa set nearby.

The choir carolled merrily on as the less doughty Hedli sidled down the left aisle, hid amongst the singers and pushed the microphone up her leg, past her chest to safely clip it at the top. Sadly the safest place to do this was in front of the phalanx of male carollers, (at least 200 in my fevered imagination but probably about 30), who must have felt they were enacting a farce. Thank goodness I was wearing black tights...

Needless to say this was the shining moment of the whole concert. When people came up afterwards it was to smile in a gently reminiscent manner as they commented on the Incident - fortunately I was told I had the legs to carry it off!! I am yet to be convinced.

However, nothing could spoil the fun, warmth and sense of community the event brought with it. I hope you all have similar experiences, apart from the microphone thing, and start to feel Christmassy

Ps And the person I wanted to win the Strictly Come Dancing Final did exactly that. Who says there's no Santa Claus?

The photo is of Leon and myself. He played a Bishop and played the maid, Ida. We were in Pool's Paradise, one of the silliest funniest plays in which to meet your future husband!

  • Oooh Nooh - Christmas is nearly here!

Added Sunday 11 December 2011 by  KathyPerks

Pat's current obsession with John's son has reminded me of Sam Barriscale who used to play John, (pictured). When he decided to move away from the programme he could never have imagined that the story of John's death would become the stuff of Amridge legends. Who can forget Tony's discovery of his son and realisation of what had happened. Gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.

Archers Addicts was at the Country Living Fair in London at the time and we had a poignant meeting with a lady whose son had suffered a car accident in the States. His life was saved but he had short term memory loss. He could remember Latin and his classical studies but she had to re-introduce herself as his mother each time she visited him. She told us that she felt soothed by what was happening in Ambridge: she felt less isolated and that some of her grief was reflected by the characters involved. We were very moved. So if you are having a tough time, made tougher by approaching Christmas, we wish you well Ambridge style. And you are not on your own. There's an account of the Women of the Year awards in January's Good Housekeeping which makes you realise just what people go through, and how brave they are.

Loads of entries for the Nigel competition. We can't wait to see him in the Paul Eddington part in 'Yes Prime Minister'. And Tim Bentinck tells us he's written a Kindle book. More details in News when we find out exactly what he's been up to. Right - back to the Christmas cards!

Added Friday 25 November 2011 by  KathyPerks

It's always good fun to visit 'Ambridge' at the Mailbox. You never know who you're going to bump into and what's the hot gossip this session. I was very pleased to share a lift with playwright, David Edgar. We were both students at the Manchester University Drama Department and I remember him as far more grown up than the rest of us! We had a quick reminisce before departing for the car park.

I caught Tim Bentinck and thanked him again for reading The Ambridge Voice for our visually imparied listeners. He says he's changed tack. 'Instead of reading it as though I've written it I now read it as if I'm a friend, so I add my own comments'. I like the sound of that, must make it really interesting, - perhaps I'd better get hold of a CD!

Of course we were buzzing about Ryan's award - he's going to be on Radio 4's 'In Touch' sometime in December so watch this Blog. And it was brilliant to know that Billy Connolly still listens to us and that Jazzer is one of his favourite characters. Talking of which I gather Graham Seed (the late lamented Nigel), is going to be in the panto News Quiz, recorded in Cardiff. It has to be said that Nigel may be late lamented but Graham hasn't looked back - soon to be seen as PM in 'Yes, Prime Minister'. Go Graham! • Visitor from Ambridge?

Added Sunday 20 November 2011 by  Kate

Look who landed on my conservatory roof the other day. I was lying in my bed thinking about getting up when there was this loud 'thunk' from the other room. My husband and I looked at each other with eyebrows raised. I pulled on my dressing gown, pulled back the curtains and saw this beautiful fellow. He looked equally surprised to see me I must say. An escapee of Will's perhaps?

After considering his options, he tentatively hopped down onto a wall, into our garden then off next door. I just hope he made it back to the fields safely as he would've had to cross a road and go quite a way. I daresay he'd have gone quicker with Brian on his tail!

  • Fun at Fladbury

Added Sunday 20 November 2011 by  Kate

A big thank you to everyone involved in the Christmas Shopping event in Fladbury on Friday (18th Nov). Having driven through pretty villages with half-timbered cottages and cosy looking pubs, we walked into Fladbury's village hall only to be greeted with a scene from Ambridge. The atmosphere was one of hustle and bustle as we wove our way between stalls filled with local crafts. I half expected Lynda to appear with a clipboard to direct me where to go!

Several glasses of mulled wine later, we happily chatted to people as they browsed goodies on our Archers Addicts stall. Ably assisted by two locals, we had plenty of opportunities to mingle. We met a lovely lady who had listened to The Archers when she was growing up in Ethiopia. We also ran into the wonderful John, who presented Hedli with a signed photo of her with Fiona Bruce and Hilary Kay from Antiques Roadshow. John has been to live recordings of Antiques Roadshow over 150 times, and that includes two trips to Australia! That's the kind of dedication we expect from you Archers fans too you know...

Anyway, it's time to take my mincemeat out of the oven and pot it up. For those of you with Jennifer's first Cookbook, turn to page 141 (my mother-in-law's favourite recipe) and get mixing! You've got two recipes to choose from in the new Cookbook - Apricot Mincemeat (p55) or Brookfield's Brandied Pineapple Mincemeat (p56) - yum!

Added Friday 11 November 2011 by  Kate

Here at AA we speak to all sorts of interesting people in all sorts of interesting places. I just took an order for a chap who was shouting at me over the sound of his mill. He was busy grinding food for cattle and said he had to keep an eye on proceedings in case the mill jammed. I half expected Brian to pop up at any moment to ask for him to jump on board with the mega dairy project! Very Ambridge.

Hope you enjoyed the drama at Ivy's funeral. It never was going to be a quiet affair now was it?

And as for events in Ambridge... I still can't believe Nic and Will are getting married! • Women of the Year

Added Wednesday 19 October 2011 by  KathyPerks

We had the most fantastic time and were awed by some of the experiences that were shared with us. All sorts of celebs were in the audience, Ruby Wax, Joanna Trollope, Juliet Stevenson, Lulu, Floella Benjamin, Julia Donaldson, to name but a few! But it wasn’t about celebrity, it was about women facing up to enormous challenges and making something of their lives while helping others. I especially liked Jackie Miller chip, a child minder who looks after both able bodied to severely disabled kids to break down barriers between them. She won Lorraine Kelly’s Inspirational Woman of the Year and deservedly so. We were asked to take a bow for The Archers – and we felt really honoured to be asked to do so.

All the women present were made to feel special and valued and we were encouraged to talk to anyone we wanted to. Everyone had a story to tell and you could only be humbled by what people go through and how brave they are. It wasn’t all serious – Sandi Toksvig was a warm and witty host and Maureen Lipman told a few stand up jokes (you’ve heard the one about the woman boiling an egg, who tells her husband to get into the kitchen to make love. ‘Why now, why here? he asks’ ‘I’ve broken the egg timer’ she replies.)

You certainly got a sense of how powerful women can be when they fight for a cause dear to their hearts. There were 400 women present and you could feel the strength!

  • Fabulous fun!

Thanks so much to everyone who came to Come Rain Come Shine this evening supporting Archers Addicts, our Archers actors, and the Samaritans. I hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did! The audience was packed out and it was a smashing atmosphere with everyone chuckling and clapping in all the right places. All in all a fantastic evening, and it was lovely to meet some familiar faces and some new ones too. We even saw a few Archers Addicts badges twinkling in the crowds.

Until next time, happy listening. KW

  • Smooching in Ambridge

Added Tuesday 4 October 2011 by  Kate

Oh no - we were working so hard here at AA-HQ that we missed the first of the new series of Ambridge Extra! We'll have to wait for it to come on iplayer...

Inspired by a recent thread on the Forum about radio kissing (outrageous) I stumbled upon this fun little interview of David and Ruth (Timothy Bentinck and Felicity Finch) on YouTube. As well as giving you a demonstration, they also discuss the infamous 'Oooh nooo' and why The Archers matters so much to many. Click smooch to listen, or click kiss me to share which Archers character you'd most like to kiss and why! As we're getting a bit hot under the collar, Adam & Joe have come up with a creative edit of an Archers episode... intrigued? Click sigh.

Having received the latest Ambridge Voice and brochure you are keeping us busy with orders and letters. I'm impressed to see people Christmas shopping already despite the hot weather, and you seem to be as excited about our new products as we are! Don't forget our latest offer for members only - an Ambridge Community Shop Bag on all orders over £21.00 (before P&P).

  • Antiques Roadshow

Added Monday 26 September 2011 by  KathyPerks

Lots of Archers fans appear to watch the Antiques Roadshow and saw me have some of my Archers memorabilia valued on the show last night (Sunday 25th September). It was such a fun day but it took place last September! One of those crisp sunlit Autumn days with Charlecote House looking its very best. Trestle tables had been set out under the trees, groaning under the weight of all sorts of pumpkins and squash in various sizes and colours. A long long queue wound up the driveway and you could have spent hours chatting and gawking at the fascinating bags and parcels people were carrying!

It took a couple of hours for Kate (Editor of the Ambridge Voice ) and myself to get to the kiosk. When we finally arrived and said who we were there was an instant buzz of interest, and we knew we were talking to listeners! Fiona whizzed over and decided to set up Hilary Kay, who she knew was an avid fan. Then we had to hide so as not to spoil the surprise.

Links to The Archers arise in all sorts of places and the Antiques Roadshow was no exception. After our piece had been filmed a tall dark, (and handsome), gentleman introduced himself as Mrs P's great nephew. Some of you will remember the redoubtable Mrs P, love of Walter Gabriel's life and Peggy Woolley's mother. She was played by the talented Pauline Seville. And my especial thanks must go to John Dallimore, Evesham painter and decorator and Archers listener who was also present. John took a great photo of the event and went to the trouble to get it signed and framed for me as a souvenir. Thanks John - you're a star!

I hope you've been enjoying The Archers lately. I must admit I've been riveted throughout the whole Bridge Farm saga, and I was really moved by poor old Eddie as he lamented his wife's disappearance last week. Poignant stuff.

  • Happy August to you all

Added Wednesday 3 August 2011 by  Jennie

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weather. We went over to Gloucestershire to visit friends on Sunday, of course listening to the Archers Omnibus on the way (poor Clarrie I feel so sorry for her, I hope it all turns out ok in the end) when we arrived I presented them with a jar of ‘Clarrie’s Crunchy Chutney’ and as our friends had also been listening to the omnibus they said ‘I hope it’s not got E-coli!’ I said that I’d actually made it and it would be delicious.

I now have a copy of the beautiful ‘Jennifer Aldridge’s Archers’ Country Kitchen’ cookbook and of course had to make something from that as soon as I could, as we are looking after our two grandsons for three days this week I thought I’d try out ‘Alice’s Favourite Fudge Spread’ it made two jars and tastes wonderful, though I only licked out the pan and saved the jars for my boys.

Best wishes to you all Ann

  • Near Escape for Angie Piper!

Added Monday 1 August 2011 by  KathyPerks

I always enjoy recording The Archers because I get to hear all the off air dramas as well as participate in the on air ones! This time it was Charles Collingwood (Brian) who held the floor in the Green Room (actually it's a hideous red, especially vibrant in the early morning episodes!). Had I heard about Angie Piper's near death experience in France? No, I certainly had not.

Apparently Angie was holidaying in France and was driving herself to the airport in a hired car. The car had manual gears and wasn't the automatic she was used to, plus it was rather large. Starting out early and in plenty of time Angie decided she had time to view a lake she had always wanted to see properly instead of whizzing past. No problem. She parked the car safely and made her way to the lake's shore.

Suddenly she heard a 'whooshing' sound and glanced back over her shoulder -  just in time to hurl herself to one side as the car sailed past her, pushing her out of the way and bruising her arm in the process. Shocked, Angie tried to work out what had happened. It looked as though she'd slipped the car into neutral but neglected to put on the hand brake and the car didn't want to be left behind!

Meanwhile the car had come to a gentle rest in the water. Luckily some young chaps turned up to save the day and were able to ease the car out of the water and onto the shore. Angie was able to continue to the airport, driving it slowly and carefully despite her own injury and the battered state of the car!

Thank goodness the tale has a happy ending. Her family could not imagine a world without Angie and we couldn't imagine an Ambridge without Jennifer Aldridge!

  • Short meetings in High Places

Added Sunday 24 July 2011 by  KathyPerks

I was chatting to Pat Gallimore, who plays Pat Archer and is in the middle of a huge story. I'm fascinated by the E-coli story because it seems to be bringing together all the elements in The Archers I enjoy most: its roots are to do with farming -  dairy farming in particular - it's affecting the Archer family young and old, it's upsetting well established relationships with people like Clarrie and therefore the Grundy clan, and we don't know how it's going to end. Oh and it's informative and educational, certainly in my case as I don't know a thing about the safety procedures that should be observed. I just hope Kathy is as good a friend to Pat in her time of need as she was in Kathy's!

Anyway, Pat was telling me that she'd been invited to Highgrove Gardens for a reception hosted by Prince Charles and several people were chatting to her about the story. 'I soon realised one of them knew more than I did! It turned out that I was talking to a representative from Yeo Vally organic products who had been advising the production team. I learned a lot!'

We've said it before, it's a small world.

P.S. Pic is of Tony and Pat (Colin Skipp & Patricia Gallimore), whose world is in the process of being turned upside down

  • I's July - Christmas must be on its way!

Added Wednesday 20 July 2011 by  Jennie

You know how it is - the school holidays have started, the office starts to empty out as well needed breaks are taken - and we start having our first deliveries for Christmas!  I'm sure you all have an idea that all is gentle and quiet in The AA office - just like Ambridge itself!  But actually we are busy beavering around behind the scenes to ensure Christmas in Archer-land is a success well before the festive period arrives!

We've already written and designed our brochure for the festive period.  The calendar is written, beautiful photographs chosen and it's being printed, and now our first goods designed and ordered especially for Christmas are arriving!  It is so exciting - much like Christmas itself.

We've had our first glimpse of the beautiful cook book which is Jennifer Alridge's Country Kitchen and it doesn't disappoint.  Full of lovely illustrations and thoughtfull ditty's written by Jennifer (Angela Piper) as well as the tasty recipes.  There are even some cut out labels included - an idea of Angela herself.  It is published next week and available for ordering now.

We've all sorts of goodies planned - tea towels, note books and jigsaws, plus arriving today a magnetic bookmark.  It is so pleasing to have an idea for a product, think of a fun design and then to have the finished article all ready to show you all and send out.  I certainly will be having a few of these - being magnetic they won't fall out of my book as I carry it around.  And I always seem to be reading more than one book at once depending on my mood and the temptations on the bookshelf!  Maybe I should join the Ambridge Bookclub - who knows maybe you can too....but I don't want to give anything away!  Just watch out for new deliveries to The Village Shop!

Have a good summer what ever you are doing!

On the 14th July, Sotheby's is auctioning the script of the first episode of The Archers which, as all you Archers fans will know, was aired 1st January 1951.

The script was used by Archers legend Gwen Berryman who played Doris Archer, and is currently owned by fellow Archers star, Charles Collingwood (Brian Aldridge). This unique piece of Archers history is estimated at £2,500-£3,500 and Charles hopes to use the money raised to help fund his daughter's wedding.

Click lot 119 to view the online catalogue - the script is one of many literary and historical treasures featured in the sale.

  • A little bird told me…

Added Thursday 30 June 2011 by  Kate

Well hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying this lovely summer weather (finally), the excitements of Wimbledon (thrilling), and The Archers (dramatic as ever – tune in tonight – Thursday 30th - for some excitement!).

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the latest issue of The Ambridge Voice. We had fun putting it together for you and our latest offers are clearly going down well. We’re already taking orders for the eagerly-awaited cookbook from ‘Jennifer Aldridge’ – yum! – and we’re working on some gorgeous new tea towels for the autumn. We’ve gone for a new style so I can’t wait to see what you make of them. Watch this space…

I also have a little bit of gossip to share with you… we’ll soon be putting a face to the voice of David Archer as Tim Bentinck just told us he’s been cast in a new BBC1 television series starring David Jason. It’s a comedy called The Royal Bodyguard in which Jason plays Captain Guy Hubble, a lifelong soldier coming up for retirement who has been put in charge of royal security, with disastrous consequences. Tim kept schtum on the details of his part, but with his royal blood we’re thinking it’s bound to be a person of pedigree! The series is going into production in July so, as always, we’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, happy listening! KW x

  • Travel and Clarrie's Crunchy Chutney...

Added Thursday 16 June 2011 by  Kate

    Hi everyone,

Well the holiday season’s almost upon us, though for us semi retired folk a trip to Italy has already taken place, with a group of folk from Peterborough and it wasn’t long into new conversations before I dropped in the fact that I work for Archers Addicts, everyone then has their own tales to tell about visits from Charles Collingwood (Brian) or Trevor Harrison (Eddie) to their own fete or bazaar.

Everyone says ‘well that must be a nice job to have’ and I must say it is. I think I’m really lucky to have such a lovely job with such great people and that includes you - it’s so nice to speak to you when you ring up to place an order or ask about one of the characters, but we can’t tell you what’s going to happen as we are sworn to secrecy! They might have to shoot me if I tell. Actually I prefer not to know myself then it’s a surprise to me too, for instance when Phil Archer died my husband and I were on the M1 when the episode was broadcast and nearly had to pull over as it was so sad, I was in tears.

So our next trip is to Cornwall where I shall be taking my ‘dum di diddle’ bag to the beach and some extra ‘dum di dum’ mugs in case our friends call round. By the time I get back the new Jennifer’s Cookbook will be published and I’m really looking forward to that, I bought the last one and my favourite recipe is Clarrie’s Crunchy Chutney. It’s so easy even my husband has made a couple of batches, though he did once get his tablespoons and teaspoons mixed up so that batch was spoilt. We always have a few jars in and everyone loves it and is amazed that no cooking is involved, hence my husband having a go.

Hope you all enjoy the holiday season. The latest newsletter is due out at the end of the month, ‘one should always have something interesting to read on the train.’

Best Wishes to you all Ann

  • Borsetshire Life arrives!

Added Saturday 4 June 2011 by  KathyPerks

We've been waiting and waiting for the arrival of the anniversary souvenir edition of the Borsetshire Life. It's such a great idea and we knew that the publishers wanted to do it because they listen to The Archers.

Well our consignment arrived on Friday and my great assistants came in to post off all the back orders. Publication was delayed so that the most up to date pictures and information were available for the contemporary part of the magazine.

I've had a read through and am very impressed with the care and quality that has gone into this. It's a reminder of the programme's farming roots. the beautiful countryside it represents, as well as some sly jokes and even Alan Tichmarsh!

If you haven't got a copy you can buy it from us in the Village Shop - Click Borsetshire Life

Ps - The only sadness is that my contribution was rejected. I'll let you have a look at some time so that you can see why! ;)

  • Glamorous life of Archers Actors

Added Monday 30 May 2011 by  KathyPerks

I always enjoy catching up with Green Room gossip when in recording. Dan (Jamie) is facing real life exams and finding revision a tough addition to his normal activities, (now where have I heard that before?). Judy and Charles (Shula and Brian, who are married in real life), are planning their daughter's wedding and it's going to be fantastic. Charles has promised not to read extracts from 'Brian & Me' but there's a lurking twinkle in his eye....

They are a talented group. Buffy (Jolene) is playing in Gogol's Inspector General, Tim (David) is touring with his one man show and Richard (Kenton) is in Moonlight and Magnolias at the Watermill. However Michael Lumsden, (Alistair), can top them all. 'I'm off to Bulgaria,' he said, ' I'm playing Kate Middleton's dad in an American series!' Now I look a bit closer I can see the resemblance.

Hope it's raining a bit less in Bulgaria

  • Spot our new mug!

Added Sunday 15 May 2011 by  Kate

This is only a quickie (I have the next Ambridge Voice to put together you know!) but I just had to let you know that I have just been presented with one of our new Simon Drew 'Spot the Archers Character' Mugs and I think you're going to love it!...

In crisp white fine bone china, the new mug is much larger than our others holding nearly a pint! (no, we don't mean Shires). It's also a bit of a puzzle, as wrapped around the mug are colourful pictograms of the names of Archers characters. It'll give you something to do while you sip your tea. In fact there's still one I haven't worked out yet, and I've nearly finished mine - better put the kettle on!

As you can see, it's feeling a little shy at the moment, but we'll let you see it soon! Over and out, KW x

Added Wednesday 27 April 2011 by  Kate

Well I for one have eaten far too much chocolate! We keep bringing in our Easter goodies to AA HQ and I just can't resist a nibble with a nice cup of coffee so the caffeine is keeping us all going!

We're getting to grips with the next issue of The Voice so I'm looking in my crystal ball to see what the future will bring our favourite Ambridge folk. I think love is in the air this spring, and it'll be interesting to see how the businesses manage with Elizabeth keeping things together at Lower Loxley, Caroline managing without Roy, and our farmers facing their usual challenges and looking forward to agricultural shows... Busy times lie ahead!

Meanwhile, we're looking forward to Borsetshire Life which is due to be published 6th May... I can't wait! We've signed off artwork on a brand new 'man-size' bone china mug which will be lovely. Plus check the News page for various upcoming events including the Museum of Rural England's exhibtion starting 1 May - it looks great!

  • Eggstra fun for Easter...

Added Thursday 14 April 2011 by  Kate

Well we thought Lilian would be far too busy to see us but her alter ego, actress Sunny Ormonde, found the time to pop in to AA HQ for a cup of tea this afternoon. I suppose we'd need to offer a nice G'n'T to lure Lilian away from Ambridge!

Meanwhile, Borsetshire Life is rushing off the shelves. Well, it would be, but the publishers have pushed the date on so we're expecting it early May. Having seen a few of the spreads we can't wait to read the final gorgeous glossy mag, but we'll just have to be patient...

As you guys can't seem to get enough of the fine bone china version of our colourful 'Dum di Dum' mug, we've incorporated it in some great Easter offers. Check out the Shop for inspiration while we try not to eat the mini Easter eggs included!

Anyway, I've got work to do on the 2012 Pocket Diary - doesn't time fly?!

  • The Big Spring Clean

Added Friday 25 March 2011 by  Kate

Hello lovely listeners, long time no speak! I've been busy putting the finishing touches to the latest Ambridge Voice which should be landing on your door mat as I type. We've had great fun putting together this issue, giving in to birthday fever on the front page, delving in to dramatic moments in Ambridge for our double page spread, and getting creative with a very special song from Jolene... I hope you enjoy all the latest gossip from Ambridge!

As for other AA business - while we keenly await the arrival of our gorgeous new eco-friendly Archers pen, Ann and Jennie have bravely ventured into our cupboards for a spring clean! We've found some amazing bits and pieces, from Archers Addict boxer shorts (!) to handknitted 2-foot versions of Joe and Eddie Grundy (see pic)! Anyway, our stationary cupboard has never looked so good.

Hope you're enjoying the sunshine. Can't wait for Ambvridge Extra (details below)! Over and out. KW x

  • Ambridge Extra - read all about it!

Added Wednesday 16 March 2011 by  KathyPerks

Well they rang me up and said 'Do you want to be in Ambridge Extra?' 'Yes,' I replied, 'What is it?' (well, I am an actor). 'It's about Ambridge but it's extra.' They responded. Sounded interesting.

Actually it was. My character, Kathy, is going through a midlife crisis alongside her son Jamie's teenage angst.  Dan, who plays Jamie, and I get on very well, and we share a sense of humour, so what you hear on the waves is real acting folks. Anyway, what Ambridge Extra will do is tell us what Jamie is up to when his mum isn't around; obviously if 'Kathy' had any sense she'd go digital and find out for herself - but she's probably too busy at the Golf Club. The good news is that even if you haven't got a digital radio you can listen through your TV or online, and if you enjoy The Archers it would be worth trying it out. It starts on April 5th.

Ambridge Extra is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am, with repeats on the same days at 2.15pm (straight after The Archers on Radio 4)

An omnibus half hour programme will air on Fridays at 10.30am, repeated on Sundays at 11.15am and 7.15pm (again, straight after The Archers Omnibus and evening episode) Can't wait!

The further good news is that there's a dishy lad called Rhys (check the pic) who we'll be hearing at The Bull as well as on Ambridge Extra. Isn't it time Kathy had a new man in her life? Of course Lilian hasn't met him yet....

Ps Mothers Day is coming up. I've reminded Jamie but if you're stumped for ideas click Shop There are some nice ideas including signed cards which are always a fun extra

  • Spring is in the air...

We've been blessed with a few lovely clear sunny days, albeit still rather chilly but it lifts my spirits and makes me think that Spring is just around the corner now.  The daffodils are starting to open up and, even more exciting, the Spring edition of The Ambridge Voice is being made ready to send to the printers!

I've just read the proofs and can tempt you with a few nuggets such as Sara Coward's (Caroline) inside scoop behind the scenes at Clarence House.  Following the now infamous anniversary story line we reminisce about other shocking stories over the last 60 years.  There's an indepth interview with Vanessa Whitburn and a fun chat with Alison Dowling (Elizabeth) about where Lizzie starts and Alison ends..  Altogether a fun read with all the usual peeks behind the scenes, readers letters, competitions and news.

Along with the newspaper the new Spring brochure is being printed with some sale bargains to tempt you plus some new goodies such as a lovely stylish wooden pen made in the UK from recycled wood. There is also a special anniversary glossy magazine 'Borchester Life' celebrating life in Ambridge - a copy of which is bound to grace Jennifer's coffee table! So lots to come.

If you already subscribe to The Ambridge Voice it will be winging its way to a letter box near you by the end of the month.  If you haven't subscribed yet - take a look in The Village Shop and sign up now!

Spring is coming...the sap is rising...look out Jolene....!

Well hello there, long time no see! Hope all's well and you've been enjoying events in Ambridge. Talking of Camilla, I've just put up a new competition which should be a right royal laugh - click Having a Laugh! to enter and let your imagination run wild. This is your chance to sport an 'I love The Archers' badge; if it's good enough for the Duchess then it's good enough for you!

I've just taken a wonderful stroll down memory lane with a brilliant audio visual slideshow of The Archers through the ages. • Dum di diddle di Duchess!

Added Thursday 17 February 2011 by  KathyPerks

Well we had a ball! Quite apart from anything else it was fun seeing so many of the cast in one place, and there were people who have left the show too. Ysanne Churman, (Grace Archer), was there and I could see Robin Pirongs in the distance. He played Sam Batton who nearly came between Ruth and David. I also had a few words with Graham Seed, obviously chuffed by his great reviews for 'Accolade'.

The Duchess is a real fan and wore her 'I love The Archers' badge from the moment she arrived. Charles Collingwood, (Brian), was pleased when she told him that her children had given her his autobiography for Christmas and she'd thoroughly enjoyed it. Patricia Gallimore, (Pat), chatted about what grand-children call their grandmothers. 'Mine call me Gaga,' confided Pat. 'So do mine' replied Camilla, 'I've five of them and sometimes they make me feel it!'

10 years ago when we met she'd described Jolene as a slapper - sadly I had to tell her on this occasion that Jolene hadn't changed. We shared a twinkle.  We'd heard that the Duchess would like to be a member of Archers Addicts, so I'd been asked to present her with membership. We'd put together a bag of goodies including two 'I'd rather be in Ambridge' mugs - one for her and one for Prince Charles. 'You probably feel like that from time to time!' I said.

I liked the typical BBC moment when Sir Michael Lyons, Chairman of the BBC Trust (who also listens - like him for that), asked us to raise our glasses to toast the 60th anniversary of The Archers and we had no glasses. He passed it off as a radio moment - well, let's face it us Archers actors are used to feasting with no feasts and drinking with no drinks!

..so we're celebrating my birthday here at AAHQ!  Hedli bought this darling little cake covered in sweet sugar roses which we've now devoured with our afternoon cuppa!  I'm also modelling my new scarf - a gift from our talented Ann who made it for me!  Looking at my Archers calendar I see Tim Hathaway (remember him?) also has a birthday this week (even born in the same year) along with William Grundy.  I can't see Ann spending her time making a scarf for dour Will though - I'm the lucky one!!  Best wishes to all the Aquarians out there!  JE

We were taken aback when a huge bouquet of gorgeous Spring flowers arrived in the office yesterday. They were from a very grateful Archers Addict, tracked down by our personal 'Poirot' in the shape of Jennie, and reunited with the wallet she had left in a taxi. How very kind and how very much Jennie appreciated the thought!

There's a buzz surrounding the role of HRH the Duchess of Cornwall who is following in Princess Margaret's footsteps with a cameo appearance in The Archers. The Duchess is a great fan of the programme so we're hoping to meet her as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations. Sara Coward (Caroline Sterling) will be telling us all about her right royal performance in the Spring issue of The Ambridge Voice. In the meantime we've heard on the grapevine that the Duchess may not be averse to becoming an honorary member of Archers Addicts! Liking her more and more......

And we're celebrating Valentine's Day in our unique Archers Addicts style, with cards signed by 'Lilian'and 'Eddie' to add mystery to Valentine cards for your loved ones. Check out the Village Shop

Hooray! Jazzer sang again! It brought back memories of the 'Ambridge has got Talent' contest during which the nation first learned that Jazzer, played by the talented Ryan Kelly, has a beautiful singing voice. I hope you enjoyed his ditty as much as I did. I'm off to seek out a haggis supper and I'm already looking forward to a warming wee dram. Have a lovely Burns night!

  • The Archers Addicts detective agency!

Added Tuesday 25 January 2011 by  Jennie

It was the usual Monday morning here at AAHQ...then I had a phone call from a chap who had found a wallet full of cash in the back of a taxi in central London.  Why call us?  Well it seems the wallet had an AA Membership card in it complete with telephone number.  So the lost wallet belonged to a member of Archers Addicts. Aha! I was able to trace the owner by their membership details - but it belonged to someone living in Oman!  'Leave it with me' I told the wallet rescuer 'and I'll get them to call you once I've tracked them down'.

But how to contact someone in Oman when their wallet has turned up in London?  I twiddled my Poirot moustache and discovered this member  of Archers Addicts was one of our Direct Debit subscribers - so we had their bank account details. I was able to call the bank in question to help me track down the wallet's owner.

Success! They had all the contact details so instructed them to call me.  I rang the wallet rescuer in London to give him the good news and 20 minutes later I had a call from a much relieved Archers Addict - having only arrived in London the evening before and our AA was over the moon to be tracked down.  I gave her the rescuer's number so by now she and the wallet should be reunited!  She couldn't get over the fact that if it hadn't been for AA she may never had seen her wallet again.  She went away happy and convinced of the good nature of London taxi travellers and that AA is good for many things!

You couldn't make up a story like this - so glad it had a happy ending.  Bouquets to the lovely chap in London who found the wallet and happy travels to our AA from Oman.

Moral of the story - always carry your AA membership card in your wallet and always pay by Direct Debit!  Oh yes and remember to call Poirot at AAHQ!

It makes such a difference when the sun shines and it's cold and crisp, rather than dank and dreary! I feel like this about the current stories. Elizabeth is handling her current crisis with such courage and determination and I'm fascinated to know what is going to happen to Lower Loxley now that Nigel isn't there to help run it anymore.

'Episodes' with Tamsin Greig, (the delicious Debbie Aldridge), at her comic best is under way and giving some laugh out loud moments. You can catch it on Mondays BBC at 2 10pm.

  • Doing a Nigel!

Added Wednesday 5 January 2011 by  KathyPerks

Graham Seed just popped us an email with an entry on the 'We love Nigel Pargetter' Facebook page. It's from a Richard Hollis: "I was clambering over the seating on the balcony at the Orange Tree Theatre last night to claim a spot in the middle of a busy row, and at my most precarious my unknown neighbour said to me, " Careful, don't do a Nigel." Part of the vernacular now."

We also gather that people have downloaded 'Nigel's' scream as a ring tone on their mobiles. Loving it.....

  • Miranda loves The Archers!

Added Tuesday 7 December 2010 by  Kate

For those of you who watch BBC2's comedy, Miranda, did you notice some rather lovely singing in last night's episode? Panicked by some hoodies in the shop, Stevie gives Miranda some advice: "Don't let them smell our fear; just act casual". They give a feeble rendition of Barwick Green before Miranda questions, "Why are you singing The Archers theme tune?" Well we all know that The Archers can be a comfort and reassuring at times of stress!

Anyway, I can't sit here chatting with you I'm afraid because you are all keeping us very busy with gorgeous Christmas orders. The Vintage CD and all our books are whizzing off the shelves along with our Jubilee Ted. I feel like one of Santa's little elves!

P.S. If you want to see the episode you can watch it on BBC iPlayer. It's the fourth episode of the second series and it's called 'A New Low'. Simply type in 'Miranda' in the BBC site's search engine and you'll find it. Enjoy.

  • Fearless Fred's fab fowl

Added Thursday 25 November 2010 by  KathyPerks

Loving Facebook and one of our Archers fans - Lying Scotsman - who contributed a recipe to last night's episode. Jazzer cooked it and panicked when it didn't turn out as expected but we thought it sounded so delicious you should have a go! Here it is

    Fearless Fred's fab fowl

    Serves 2

    Ingredients

2 chicken breasts with the skin still on
    2 lemons
    40ml Soy Sauce
    1.5 level dessertspoons of flour
    1.5 level dessertspoons of paprika
    olive oil
    small knob of butter

    How to cook it

Set the oven to about 210C (Gas 7).

Mix the flour and paprika together on a plate.

Cut the chicken breasts into two pieces each of about equal size/weight, and coat well with the flour & paprika mix.

Juice the two lemons, and mix with the soy sauce in a bowl.

In a saucepan, melt the butter with the olive oil, and get it hot.

Fry the chicken skin side down very fast until the skin is almost black.

Turn the chicken over and fry for a minute.

Put the chicken into an ovenproof dish, skin side up, and pour in the lemon/soy sauce mix. Add any of the remaining flour & paprika mix as well, and whisk it with a fork till all the dry mix is incorporated.

Put in the oven for 25 minutes.

The chicken is now ready. Put the chicken pieces on the plates to serve.

Pour the liquid through a sieve into a small saucepan, add a small bit of butter, and heat to thicken.

Lovely with boiled potatoes and green beans.
