The Ambridge Voice - it's coming! - 06 September 2010

The Ambridge Voice - it's coming! Long time no see. I've returned from galivanting in France to discover a treasure trove of brilliant new merchandise, including our special Jubilee teddy and the gorgeous pocket diary. We've even got some classy black and silver chocs to give away, celebrating 60 years of The Archers. Don't you just love birthdays? We do!

The next Ambridge Voice is written and is being designed as I type. In it we report back on the sparkling Diamond Jubilee and have some fun with the recent ups and downs of Kathy and Kenton's relationship. We also explore the murky realms of murder most horrid as Hallowe'en fast approaches. Great stuff!

Hope I've whetted your appetite - now I'd better get on with some work! Over and out. KW x

Christmas is coming!! - 24 August 2010

Christmas is coming!! Well I know it is only August but we are already gearing up for the festive season with new goodies especially to celebrate the 60th anniversary year.

As I type this our delivery of the new gorgeous Jubilee Calendar is being unloaded into our stock room! It is beautiful! Plus - the brand new pocket diary is also here and as soon as I have written this we will be tearing open the boxes to see it for the first time! We are excited to have a brand new product that we have worked hard on and we really hope you will love it! I do think it is going to be one of those great items which will make super gifts for so many people you know, but it's going to be hard to give them away! Lovely & glossy but a slim pocket size and at just the right price - so useful!

If you've already ordered - they will all be on their way this week - if not, don't wait too long as you don't want to be disappointed! My top tip for this year!

Now what is it they say about keeping diaries - only the good girls do as the bad girls never have the time??... JE

Back at base - 15 August 2010

Back at base Suddenly realised that we hadn't updated this since being away in Norway! There's always a lot to catch up with when we get back and I was instantly into the recording studios. I liked the scene between Jim and Kathy - John Rowe and I worked together a lot in the old Pebble Mill days and we got into our working rhythm very rapidly. And how nice to show another aspect of Jim, and the lovely reassurance you get from older people who've been around and understand the bigger picture, with some compassion. Jim is an interesting character.

We've been having fun with our Christmas merchandise (always weird to be thinking of Christmas in the middle of August!). The Calendars are on their way and Tim and Flick (David & Ruth) will be signing cards this year. It seems right as they are the ones to carry the flag for Dan & Doris, and Jill & Phil. We've also got a little pocket diary this year which I'm looking forward to seeing.

Still letters and pics from the Malvern event - people want another but we don't know yet what the BBC has planned. I'm envisaging a year of parties and celebrations as we're 60, fantastic record, but the recession may nip that plan in the bud. Looking forward to Alice's wedding barbecue, finding out who Emma's mystery follower is (surely not Will???!!!), and why Helen's pregnancy is so trouble free. HN

We're sailing! - 27 July 2010

We're sailing! I'm writing this looking out at small houses tucked into the mountains surrounding this fjord. We have had a most marvellous time with spectacular light at 'night' in the land of the Midland Sun. As usual we've met people with links to the show - such as the matron from Torquay who nursed Gwen Berryman, and a chap whose uncle knew Godfrey Baseley very well! The highlight for me has been the lectures from commentator David Mercer, fresh from Wimbledon. He's a charmer and has been giving us some behind the scenes gossip and info about my tennis heroes. Oh to shake the hand of someone who has shaken the hand of Federer...

We've had packed sessions and tapped into a rich vein of listenership. For some it just reminds them of their youth. One lady said that they were only allowed to listen to The Archers if they had been good. I rather liked that. Anyone who hasn't visited Norway should try to get there. It is never-endingly beautiful, very clean with charming people. Ah well - in a couple of days or so it's back to England and Ambridge (we record again on Monday). But what a fantastic break! HN

All aboard! - 13 July 2010

All aboard!
Hello lovely listeners. I know the weather has turned a bit chilly - it's playing havoc with Joe's Farmer's Lung - but it gives you all the more reason to curl up with a cup of tea and enjoy your favourite programme while you wait for some sunshine!

We're busy at AA HQ as per usual. We have neat piles of scripts, papers and prizes all ready to go onboard the Black Watch for our next cruise. Excitement is growing as we look forward to taking to the sea and heading to Norway. Adrian Flynn has written a great script and we have a wonderful team of actors and producers with us, so the onboard sessions are going to be something very special. I'm a bit worried about Matt being onboard as I understand he is still under curfew - I hope the Borchester constabulary don't track him down!

For those of you who have never joined us on a cruise, I'll be giving you a sneeky peek into life on the ship in the next issue of The Ambridge Voice. In the meantime, I'd better get packing. Over and out. KW

Fun at Feckenham - 05 July 2010

Fun at Feckenham Pretty little cottages, rolling green countryside, a bustling community village shop... sound familiar? I'm wondering whether Feckenham is Ambridge! As Hedli said, we had a lovely time at Feckenham Village Hall and were totally enthralled by Joanna Toye who lifted the curtain and gave us a peep behind the scenes of our favourite radio show.

We were warmly welcomed by the locals, the majority of whom listen to The Archers. In fact two bright sparks said they could write The Archers between them based on goings on in the village. Knowing looks were exchanged and the odd eyebrow was raised!

In between entertainment from Jo and tending our stall, Hedli and I sampled local produce, enjoying lovely local cheese and delicious ales from Purity who are based in Great Alne, Warwickshire. Having met some wonderful characters, we felt the event had transported us to a corner of Ambridge itself - roll on the Village Fete!... KW

Fab Feckenham - 01 July 2010

Fab Feckenham We had a great time last night at the Village Hall in Feckenham, Worcestershire. Feckenham has its own community run village shop which you can read about in the Summer issue of The Ambridge Voice, on its way to you over the next week or so. Jo Toye was there and gave a really fascinating talk about Godfrey Baseley and how The Archers started as well as some of the script writing hazards: when you plan a big story and nature takes over as when Foot and Mouth hit the UK and Brookfield had to fall in line - or planning Betty's death because the actress wanted to emigrate to New Zealand (did she bump into Lucy?) and then having to deal with the real life death of Mary Wimbush (Julia Pargetter) in the same time span. As usual people in the audience added to the patchwork of knowledge that we have accumulated over the years. We were told that the programme was interrupted on November 22nd 1963 with the news that Kennedy had been shot. Then on it went. I don't why I love this stuff - I just do!

Our Vintage Archers tea towel pleased a lot of people. I suppose it brings back golden memories when you see some of the actors/characters who have become household names over the years. Quite a tribute. Anyway I most go and watch more Wimbledon. HN

Success! - 24 June 2010

Success! The Jubilee event exceeded our wildest dreams. The Three Counties Show created a charming piece of the Showground which became Ambridge for the day. Loads of fans turned up and the cast were fantastic too. There was a real atmosphere of good will. I remember one journalist attending one of our previous conventions looking very surprised and saying 'But it seems as if they all know each other!' And I suppose in a way they do!

We're all still a bit shattered as the preparations were intense. Destination Worcestershire did a great job with the Jubilee bags and Kate had created a most marvellous Treasure Trail. We're waiting for people to get back to us for their Jubilee car stickers! Our vintage Tea Towel sold a treat as did the Dum di dum mug. Sometimes you just have to see things instead of pictures to want to buy them!

I think my team are ace: Jennie, Kate, Polly and Kate (2). We had fabulous volunteers as well - Sara from The Archers production team, Camilla - The Archers archivist, Karen - a mate from Stratford and Agnes, Trevor's Mum and a great support. Love them all.

We'll be covering it all in our September issue of the Ambridge Voice. Thanks for all your lovely messages and cards. If any of you have pictures or stories to tell we'd love to hear from you. Email kate@archers-addicts.com. Now back to the football/Wimbledon/cricket. No wonder I'm tired!

The Jubilee is fast approaching... - 08 June 2010

The Jubilee is fast approaching... Well we are working feverishly at AA HQ in preparation for the wonderful Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 19th June. We are hemmed in by boxes of new merchandise and treats for the Jubilee Goodybags. Our new Ambridge Treasure Trail has just arrived and is looking fab. Jennie and I abandoned the office to take a lovely drive in the country to research some of the prettiest areas in Worcestershire and we know people are going to love discovering the 'real' Ambridge!

We've hardly had time to listen to our favourite radio programme, but I'm definitely tuning in tonight as it’s going to be a BIG episode. Will Ambridge ever be the same again?!...

Happy listening. KW

Norman Painting's Service - 28 May 2010

Norman Painting's Service What a lovely occasion in a beautiful setting at St Martin-in-the-fields Church in Trafalgar Square. Norman would have been tickled pink at the warmth, care and delicacy of how the programme in his memory was put together and delivered. For the cast it had the added blessing of a reunion with actors and crew no onger involved in the show. David Parfitt (Tim Beacham), Richard Derrington (Mark Hebden), Moir Leslie (Sophie and Janet Fisher) all attended. Previous Editor, Liz Rigby, journalist Gillian Reynolds and John and Norma Major could also be seen in the Church. Ysanne Churchman (Grace) read alongside Alison Dowling (Lizzie) most poignantly and violinist Charlotte Scott brought tears to the eyes with her exquisite rendering of Vaughan William's 'The Lark Ascending' ascending. Stephen Fry, friend to The Arches and most especially to Norman, remembered a picnic with Ned Sherrin who, when someone commented how you needed to understand Tudor architecture to understand the British character, remarked 'No not Tudor architecture, Norman Painting'. Members of Archers Addicts, contributors to the various Archers Message Boards were also present, the people who Norman Painting said 'made Phil Archer what he was'. There will be full coverage in the Summer issue of The Ambridge Voice and more in Online Addicts. Another special memory to add to many others we've gathered over the years.

The politics of The Archers - 14 May 2010

The politics of The Archers I had quite a chuckle on the way home last night lisenting to Eddie Mayer on PM. He was talking to Mark Damazer about the coverage this week of the breaking political situation. Despite everything The Archers continued - Eastenders and Holby City were cancelled and apparently there were over 1000 complaints about this but no such fate for The Archers - who would dare? Gordon Brown's resignation speech started at 7.16 on Tuesday night, then the Dave and Nick show in the garden at Downing Street on Wednesday started at 2.18 - just a coincidence?? I have this vision of Gordon telling Sarah that he can't resign until he knows what happens with Pip and Jude, and then Nick telling David that before he faces the world's press he needs to know what is going on with the Community Shop! What fun! As Eddie Mayer said - 'Three things in life are certain - death, taxes and The Archers'!
Hurruh! JE

The Bull Quiz - 04 May 2010

The Bull Quiz Had a great time on Sunday at The Bull Literary Quiz. Discovered that I didn't know quite a lot in terms of general knowledge (do you know the airport named after a famous explorer?), but was okay about The Archers (do you know when Adam Macy was born?). Everyone was downing pints and spritzers and having a laugh. They were all very pleased with their Goody Bags and Jo Toye read out some very interesting pieces of trivia from her book, The Archers Miscellany, while Vanessa bantered with Trevor (Eddie) who was compering the quiz. He's had plenty of practice from the cruises!

Now I just have to fill in time until the Election...... KP

Wow! - 26 April 2010

Wow! I can't say my life is dull! On Friday I attended the 'Asparagus Run' at Evesham with Trevor (Eddie). He was compering and I was there to read the prize winning Odes to Asparagus. We'll be putting up the Odes and some pics later today. We were in Abbey Park at 7.30am (don't ask!) and the sun started to shine thank goodness. The Morgan car swept up the drive with the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire and the festivities began. We tasted asparagus sausages, asparagus scones and asparagus jam and even asparagus white chocolate cake - I wasn't so sure about that. It was good fun, and I had steamed asparagus with melted butter in the evening. My favourite!

Then on Friday I was standing on a box at the top of Bridge Street in Stratford upon Avon compering the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations: only talking in front of town dignitaries, Royal Shakespeare Company luminaries, and academic scholars. Once again the sun shone, and I managed to inspire the crowd to sound like owls to set the background for the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony scene! Then a couple of actors performed the scene in full with Juliet leaning out of the open window above Austin Reed! The belly dancers, samba bands, giant puppets and Captain Dangerous were ready to follow the procession. I completely loved the mix of all the fun of the fair with the solemnity of over thirty Ambassadors and High Commissioners coming to Stratford to lay flowers on the grave of the bard. Also that I could wear the wedding outfit, and hat, bought for my daughter's wedding last September.

Tonight I'll be attending the Gala reception as the Stratford Literary Festival gets under way. Do check 'News' for details of our Bull Literary Quiz at the Civic Hall, Sunday, 2nd May. Editor Vanessa Whitburn, author and scriptwriter, Jo Toye, Trevor and myself will be there. Lots of opportunity to enjoy a drink, a challenge to your knowledge of Ambridge and insights into what it's like belonging to and writing about the noble institution that is The Archers! See you there! HN

Opening a Community Shop - 16 April 2010

Opening a Community Shop This has to be one of the favourite storylines! We've been inundated with people who are trying to set up their own community shops. It's such a sign of the times that we're going back to wanting our local shops. It's great being able to buy all that you want under the same roof but it's not as satisfying as shopping locally. Having a chat, picking up on the gossip, helping a neighbour, all make you feel that you (and they) matter. There seems to be a hunger for the more three dimensional experience. I opened a shop in Matfield, an enchanting village near Tunbridge, and we'll be taking a look at this and other shops in the next issue of the Ambridge Voice. Can they be run by volunteers? We in Ambridge have the problem of Susan of course. You have to be feeling strong to run the gamut of her questions and curiousity! HN

Celebrating The Archers! - 09 April 2010

Celebrating The Archers! Well I've had a lovely quiet day at the office while Hedli has been off galavanting and doing shobiz things like opening a shop and attending a photo shoot. While the boss is busy entertaining the masses, I've been keeping on top of all our office work and sending out tickets for the Jubilee in June. Everyone is so enthusiastic about it, guests and actors alike; it's going to be a brilliant day.

We've also had the proofs through for the next calendar and it's looking gorgeous. I can't wait to put it on my kitchen wall! Seasons fly by in this office - while the rest of the world adjusts to the Spring-like weather we're already thinking about next year and choosing frosty pictures to represent December!

Enjoy the warmer weather, KW x

Celebrating The Archers! - 27 March 2010

Celebrating The Archers! People are buying their tickets for the Diamond Jubilee event and I'm amazed at the number who remember a convention we held at Malvern in the very early days of Archers Addicts. They tend to think it was 'a few' years ago. In fact it's eighteen! They have brought back one of my most vivid memories. It was 11pm and people were wending their way home: finally there was just one woman left who came running up to us in great distress. 'Someone has stolen my car!' she cried. We looked all over the Show-ground - no car. We called the police in and there was a lot of shaking of heads and note-taking. It was now midnight. Then a strange expression crossed the woman's face. 'Oh dear!' she exclaimed. 'I've forgotten. I didn't bring the car - I was supposed to get a taxi'. You wouldn't believe it if it was in Ambridge! KP

The Wonders of Worcester - 22 March 2010

The Wonders of Worcester Well thanks to those of you who came to see us at the Worcester Guild Hall this weekend - particularly to the ever loyal Vicky and Jan who braved the miserable weather to come and say hi. We had some great chats and met all sorts of interesting people, both from other stands and passers by. It's amazing how many links people have with The Archers; we met cousins and neighbours of actors, scriptwriters and producers. It really is a small world. I know it's hard to believe, but not everyone in Worcestershire is a fan of The Archers. My favourite comment came from one rather beligerent man who promptly informed me that The Archers was for women; I wondered if he was confusing us with Women's Hour!

Meanwhile, The Ambridge Voice is landing on people's doorsteps as I type and, as Easter fast approaches, we're thinking up some fun offers. We're also looking forward to hearing Trevor Harrison (Eddie) on Good Friday discussing his mental map of Ambridge on Radio 4... should be fun!

Anyway, I'd better get on with some work! Over and out. KW x

P.S. The picture is of Hedli manning the stand but I'm afraid you'll need a magnifying glass to see it!

Dum di dum - hurray! - 19 March 2010

Dum di dum - hurray! So excited! We've been working on a new design dum di dum mug to go with our dum di dum tea towel, which has been selling really well. The sample has come into today and it looks lovely - fun and fresh. It rather lifts the spirits! KP

Kids! - 15 March 2010

Kids! My niece tells me that my five year old great nephew heard me on the radio yesterday and asked 'if I say hello will she say hello back?' It made me smile.

Very touched by a Mothers Day card from Dan who plays 'Jamie'. See! He may be a bad boy in The Archers but in real life he's a poppet!

Looking forward to meeting people at Destination Worcestershire's 'On your Doorstep' event at the Worcester Guildhall this Saturday (20th March). I just hope I get there as my Sat Nav is a new toy - fortunately Kate will be my guide.

The new Ambridge Voice and brochure will be mailed out next week. It's such a huge project each time but there's always something to write about and there are so many Archers links. Someone rang up to tell us that they used to live next door to Gwen Berryman (Doris). The Archers definitely has a place in our folklore. KP

Spring in the air - Mum's the word! - 02 March 2010

Spring in the air - Mum's the word! At last March is here and we can wave goodbye to dreary old February! I always feel so much better with the hope of Spring around the corner, the snowdrops in my garden nodding on to the daffodils, tiny new lambs in the fields, blue skies and a gerneral feeling of better things to come. We are busily working on our Spring brochure and filling the pages with the bright and beautiful to cheer you up too!

So with Spring on its way, it means Mothering Sunday is following close behind. I always associate it with posies of fragrant spring flowers - cheerfulness and hyacinths - as well as spending time with my lovely Mum. We've put together a few ideas with Mum's in mind in the Village Shop and made them postage and packing free to help you reward your Mum - or even yourself.

Talking of Mums in Ambridge it seems Helen's dreams of motherhood are the biggest surprise - didn't see that one coming....JEN

Hallelujah! - 28 February 2010

Hallelujah! June Spencer (Peggy) was so interesting on Desert Island Discs. Amazing how little you know of people with whom you've worked for years. I never knew that she wrote for Cyril Fletcher!

Her 'Hallelujah' story put me in mind of a storyline when Jill, Lynda and Kathy belonged to a choir and had to sing 'Hallelujah'. Paddy (Jill) doesn't sing but Carole (Lynda) has perfect pitch (I think I was somewhere in between!). Norman came into studio to help on the piano and even he was daunted by the resulting cacophony. The trouble was that the story called for Jill to be pitch perfect and Lynda to be unable to sing. I'll never forget Paddy and myself leaping from our chairs with arms raised trying to hit the high notes, and Carole's attempts to avoid them......HN

Archers rage? - 21 February 2010

Archers rage? I gave a talk to the Droitwich Civic Society on Friday (19th Feb) and had a great time. Many people present were well into their sixties and I was interested that when I asked if they 'silver surfed' they all shook their heads. A reminder of part of our core audience that doesn't want to know about the web and has never heard of the 'Archers rage' that can be whipped up by the various message boards (apart from ours obviously...) However, they felt a bit of venting was no bad thing and might save the NHS a bob or two. They love the topicality of The Archers and three people came up to me afterwards to tell me why Helen's storyline is so true to their lives. They felt that the programme keeps very much up to date and that the pace and colour of the stories chime with what goes on in the real world. I'm hoping they'll come to our Jubilee event - then they can tell Vanessa what they think in person!

Milestones - 12 February 2010

Milestones Well we had a great time at the NEC trade fair. It's really good to see the latest trends and we always come away with great ideas. We've got a few ideas tucked away for a special commemorative gift for The Archers' 60th birthday, but you'll just have to wait and see what they are...

Meanwhile, it's been a big week for The Archers, as those of you who listened tonight will know. It's a day we knew was coming, and an emotive one at that. Still, keep on listening as there are plenty interesting storylines coming up. Don't forget to tune in on Wednesday 22nd February for an announcement which may come as a surprise to say the least... well, I had to scrape my jaw off the floor when I heard!

In the meantime, I hope you all have a happy Valentine's Day. KW x

We'd love to hear from you! - 08 February 2010

We'd love to hear from you! Well if it is February and it is snowing (it is!) it must be time for our annual visit to the Gift Spring Show at the NEC. The show takes over the whole of the NEC exhibition space for five days and is HUGE, and it is where we go to search for new ideas for our AA gifts and goodies. However it is all very well us looking at endless coasters, cushions and candles - what do you want to buy from Archers Addicts?? Last year we learned so much from all of you that we met at the Gardeners World Live / Good Food show in June. As a result of your pleas we produced our lovely 'dum di dum' tea towel as so many of you said that is what you wanted to buy for yourselves or for friends. And you have! It has been a real sucess. In fact we will be including them in the renewal gift packs for our Gold Members in the Spring.

So please send us an e-mail to tell us what you think we have missing from our range of Archers themed gifts and we can go in search of them. I wander what it will be - a pair of Pip's new short hot pants or Helen's hankie, or maybe Lynda's garden trug??

Meanwhile we will all be up bright and early to trudge around the trade stands looking for new pens, cups and keyrings galore, especially with the Diamond Anniversary coming up! It is always fun meeting our suppliers and seeking out new ones. I feel quite like Susan with all this talk of the Village Shop! Better stop now!!

P S Don't forget Valentines Day - it is just around the corner (just a hint for my loved one)- but who will be getting a valentine in Ambridge I wander??... JEN

Out of it! - 02 February 2010

Out of it! Three interesting things to report. Having a hamburgher after recording in the Mailbox who should walk in but the Krankies! Of course I did the old thing of a knowing smile like we were great mates before I could stop myself. It's just so astonishing to see people you've only seen on telly in the flesh. That brings me on to the character list we're building for the Diamond Jubilee event. 'David', 'Tom', 'Lilian', 'Eddie' will be there and more to come. The third thing isn't so interesting but it jolted me awake. I was listening to a play on Radio 7 and dozing off over my tissues and cough drops when the cast list was read out and it included my name! I hadn't recognised myself (and worse still had no recollection of playing the part.) Those were the Golden Days of Pebble Mill when Terry, Pat, Kim and I never stopped working in all sorts of plays and stories. Good fun HN

Flying solo - 02 February 2010

Flying solo Well the office is quiet this week as the MD is ill - get better soon Hedli! - so on my mission to find someone to talk to I've resorted to hounding Archers actors! I've been filling them in on our plans for the Jubilee and they can't wait to join in; it's going to be such a special day.

Meanwhile, the next edition of The Ambridge Voice is coming along nicely. We've had some brilliant photos and archive material sent in, so you can look forward to some interesting articles in the next issue.

We'll be heading to the trade fair next week to scoop up some new merchandise ideas too. Don't forget to let us know if you have any ideas and we'll see what we can do!

Over and out. KW

Love is in the air - 21 January 2010

Love is in the air Well now the snow has subsided we have no excuse to stay inside and listen to The Archers… except we just have to find out what Annette's final decision is going to be… and what’s going to happen to the Village Shop… and whether poor Jazzer will recover from his broken heart…!

Talking of broken hearts, we’re also getting in the mood for Valentine’s Day, thinking of some fun romantic offers. Two boxes of heart shaped chocolates arrived today to send out with orders – hurray! I wonder whether Fallon will weaken as February 14th approaches?

Meanwhile, we’re enjoying planning the wonderful Diamond Jubilee we’re celebrating in June and Trevor Harrison (Eddie Grundy) came in today with some great ideas. He particularly enjoyed the bit about a free glass of cider for all ticket holders. We hope to see you there!

Over and out for now. KW

Office Insanity - 11 January 2010

Office Insanity Office staff outdoing each other with peculiar outfits to stave off the cold, leaping about the office in woolley tights, stripey socks, layered tops, longjohns - you name it. Wonder how Caroline would handle it HN

Hurray for snow! - 06 January 2010

Hurray for snow! Too snowy to get into the office today so I went out and bought some boots instead. Had coffee and sat near the window looking out at the people going by as the snow fell. I could have been in Paris (ou es tu ma belle Lynda?). Saw a dead ringer for Mike, walking around in shorts and a couple of Pips (not in a surreal sense) throwing snowballs. I hope there will be a topical insert about the snow, although perhaps the actors won't be able to get to the Mailbox to record! Topical inserts, for those who don't know, are occasions when actors are called back to re-record a scene with rewrites touching upon a big story in the news. I think swine flu was the last one but am open to you emailing in to tell me I've got it all wrong. Keep warm! HN

Happy New Year! - 04 January 2010

Happy New Year! Well, we're back in the office and it's like we've never been away! We have orders and answerphone messages awaiting us and the office is slowly thawing out after a cool couple of weeks. We just had a great call from a gentleman phoning on behalf of his operatic society - they are performing the Mikado and wanted to know what year Lynda staged it in Ambridge. The answer is 2000 and it's a year that Tom won't forget in a hurry as he performed in the production alongside both of his then girlfriends, the leggy Lauren and cracking Kirsty!

Talking of tumultuous relationships... it looks like 2010 is going to be an interesting year for the heartbroken Helen. Tune in on Friday 8th as it promises to be a very interesting episode! The plot thickens...

Happy listening! KW

Starting with a bang? - 29 December 2009

Starting with a bang? Poor Helen - no Christmas cheer for her. We're beginning the climb down after Christmas too. So much preparation and it passes in a flash. New Year's Eve to come and then it's back in the office. We've got a meeting to talk through some of the plans for the Midlands Diamond Jubilee. This is the bit I like best as we have so many archive pics and memorabilia to draw upon and I enjoy making the connections. We also thought we might set up a stand for Addicts to display, sell and exchange their Archers bits and pieces as so many of you have collections. All ideas for other things gratefully received, so just email us at dum.di.dum@archers-addicts.com if you have any brain waves. Well, back to the celebrations. Happy New Year to you all! HN

Christmas Cheer - 17 December 2009

Christmas Cheer As there was no official Christmas party this year some of us got together and arranged to have a meal at the Mailbox. It was hilarious! Like being in the dining room of Fawlty Towers. They'd run out of rice (!), no french fries, no lamb shanks. We waited 45 mins for the starter of 'crevettes' which turned out to be four small prawns, slightly browned lettuce leaf and a huge wodge of lemon - this for £6.95 mark you. We couldn't find the chorizo in the chorizo and chicken dish, or the artichokes in the artichoke pizza. Tap water arrived but no glasses, no bread, - thank goodness for the wine. It was left to Charles Collingwood (Brian) to explain that we would not be paying full price for such lamentable food and poor service. Sometimes useful to have a Brian around! HN

Recording... - 04 December 2009

Recording... It was great to be back in studio after such a long absence. Made me realise that it's not just the acting you miss but chatting with your mates. It's unusual in our profession to know such a big group of actors over such a long period of time. When people ask if we all get on with each other I say it's like a family at Christmas! But I've made some really close friends with the cast and we all draw rank if anyone gets criticised. I enjoyed the scenes with Richard (Kenton) as I always do. He's a generous actor and is always full of ideas if you get stuck over a line or a situation. John Rowe (Jim Lloyd) and I have known each other for years and of course we both say it was a Golden Age when we worked at Pebble Mill. I suspect this may have something to do with age. Aaaaaaaaaaargh! HN

The Countdown begins... - 30 November 2009

The Countdown begins... The last day of November and at last the weather is seasonally cold so the countdown to Christmas begins! We are all like Santa's eleves here at AAHQ busy getting your parcels of Archers goodies dispatched. The Christmas 'Ambridge Voice' will be arriving through your letter box any day now - if you are a Member of Archers Addicts that is. It is packed full of Ambridge festive stories as well as an end of year message from Vanessa Whitburn and news of something special to happen next year! Ooohhh! Better sign up now if you're not a Member already! If you haven't finished your Christmas shopping yet don't worry we are having our own countdown to Christmas in the Village Shop with weekly special offers on items that will make perfect gifts for someone on your list. We're burning the midnight oil to ensure everyone gets all their parcels right up to the 23rd December - and all with reduced Postage and Packing charges! How kind! I'm busy planning a Christmas at home with family arriving from all over the country to celebrate together - let the festivities begin...well once I've order my goose and bought my sprouts that is! Stir up Sunday - 22 November 2009

Stir up Sunday Really touched by the Message Board intention to stir up their puddings alongside Phil tonight. It brings home to me more than ever just what a hole Norman has left behind him. The BBC are intending a Memorial service but we have no further details as yet and I imagine it will be some time in the New Year. At least that means Norman will be remembered in the anniversary of when the programme started in the Midlands, even if he can't be there.
I'm recording next week after a rather long gap. The challenge is imagining how life has been for Kenton and Kathy over the last few months. It'll be nice to see Richard (Kenton) again and I must remember an Addicts Xmas ted for his daughter. She rather fell in love with the ted we gave as a prize on the last cruise! Richard is hopefully not revealing all in 'Calendar Girls' so I'll get the latest gossip on that. The chat off air can be quite as much fun as the chat on air....HN

Off air soap - 16 November 2009

Off air soap Well the soap stories in our office out do those on air! I walked in the office today and this is what had happened to us over the weekend:

1. Ann's daughter got married in Manilla - lovely surprise for Ann and much champagne into the early hours. There'll be more celebrations at Christmas
2. Ann's Mum fell downstairs and hurt her back
3. On Friday Jennie nearly drove into a tree that had fallen in the storms. Then it was a question of trying to stop other people doing the same (amazing how many people just sheared past ignoring what was going on)
4. Kate was Godmother at a Christening
5. Kate and I went to see 'Bright Star' - Jane Campion's film about John Keats and Fanny Brawne - and were knocked out by the experience.

There you are. A weekend in the life of Archers Addicts staff. The Matt & Lilian saga pales by comparison!

Archers Diamond Jubilee Celebrations - 13 November 2009

Archers Diamond Jubilee Celebrations We've been looking ahead to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the first broadcast of The Archers in the Midlands only. We've talked with Malvern Showground, (in the old days The Archers used to visit the Three Counties Show every year), and Destination Worcestershire and we've got an outline for an event that we hope will suit everyone. Once all the preliminary chat is out of the way I like the fun of brain storming what we can do and how. We've got Vanessa to agree to give a talk and she is a fount of all knowledge about the programme. I've also got some gorgeous archive pics that we can use. I loved Jethro, Walter and Martha Woodford. Together with Tom Forrest they brought idiosyncratic country characters to life and their voices take me straight back to what feels like an innocent age! News of our plans will be in the Christmas issue of The Ambridge Voice, out at the end of November HN

New beginnings - 04 November 2009

New beginnings Thank you for the comments which have been pouring in for Norman. We are obviously very sorry that he has gone, but we are pleased he has left behind so many fond memories. Your comments are a testiment to his talent and the crucial part he played in the programme. To read these comments, just head to the Homepage and click on 'Tributes to Norman Painting'.

Meanwhile, the world keeps turning and we are busy putting the finishing touches to the Christmas Edition of The Ambridge Voice. It should be winging it's way to you by the end of the month. We are also starting to think about next year's Calendar and Diary - talk about forward planning! It takes a long time to produce as we have some fun with the writing and we want to get the images just right for everyone to enjoy. Better get back to it! KW

Sad feelings - 31 October 2009

Sad feelings It's been a sad end to the week with the news of Norman's death. We knew he was increasingly frail but it's still a shock. Norman has always been there - and now he isn't, it's hard to take on board. We've had the most marvellous warm and sincere messages. I'm seeing if we can find a way to put them up on the site for people to browse as there are so many associated stories. People remember listening to Phil, meeting Norman, feeling that he represented an enduring philosophy of life grounded in common sense. And that's really been down to him. A constant in a shifting world. Thanks for sharing - it's really helped with my own sense of loss.HN

The end of October already! - 29 October 2009

The end of October already! Well the days are drawing in and the clocks have been turned back and it is nearly Halloween - why am I always amazed how fast the year passes? I am sure it is nothing to do with me getting older! This time of year always means more time at AAHQ for me and less time at home as we get busier and busier with the approach of the Christmas & I change from casual part timer to intense full time work. I did manage to get some time away last weekend and hit the big shops in London to do some of my own Christmas shopping - I always enjoy it if I do it early enough as the shops are realtively empty of people but full of stock, so all my neices and nephews and ever expanding family have been ticked off my list! The other thing I love about Christmas shopping is spending money but in a guilt free way as it is for other people! Hurruh! Back in the office we know you are all getting ahead with your Christmas shopping too as orders for AA goodies are arriving by telephone, the web and post (yes it is getting through!) so it is all hands to the pump to process them. Despite the postal strike we are still getting your mail and we know you are getting your parcels too but if you are concerned we have set up some lovely couriers who will whisk your goodies direct to your door. There is a small extra charge but worth it if you want to ensure speedy delivery. And like the shops in town, we too are full of brand new stock just waiting to fill someone's stocking! It is great here at Christmas as we become part of our customers celebrations helping choose gifts for friends and writing festive messages to go with the parcels - and once again realising that The Archers is such a huge part of all our lives whether it is listening together over a glass of egg nog , or sending an Archers themed gift to a loved one. All this and Halloween still to come.....back to my black cat and broomstick. Now I wonder who will be flying around on their broomstick in Ambridge this year...? JEN

Alive & Kicking! - 19 October 2009

Alive & Kicking! Hello everyone - you will be glad to know that I have not been eaten by lions, despite seeing one very close! I'm looking forward to getting back into the office tomorrow and catching up on all I've missed; I've already listened to two omnibuses, so am doing my best to get with it.

I'm pleased to hear that Vicky is as excruciatingly 'nice' as she was when I left and that poor old Jack is one step closer to getting settled in a care home. My favourite scene, however, was during the celebrations at Grange Farm when Oliver told Clarrie that he thinks of Ed as a son. I loved the way Eddie walked in and the conversation just hung in the air, then Oliver gently tried to restore Eddie's pride. All the better for a bit of subtlety and The Archers at its very best.

By the way, I have just eaten a huge portion of 'Amy's Vegetable Lasagna' from The Archers Cookbook, made by my mother-in-law, and I can highly recommend it - it's delicious! Over and out for now, KT x (Oops, just realised I'm a KW now!)

Bitten by beasts? - 05 October 2009

Bitten by beasts? My daughter Kate's wedding day sped all too quickly and now she and her new husband are on walk Safari. So I'm trusting they don't get nipped by a wandering beast (I'm not talking Jeremy Clarkson here). We'd like the marriage to last

Charles Collingwood, (Brian), is on our screens promoting his book 'Brian & Me' so we're getting a lot of calls from people wanting signed copies. Charles keeps all of us in the Green Room entertained with his stories so I imagine the book will be a fun read. Saw Tamsin Greig (Debbie) as Miss Bates in Emma last night - a joy to watch. And Mr Knightley looks more fun than usual in productions of Emma. A little less sanctimonious and more common sense. Anyway, back to work! HN

Links with home and wedding belles! - 21 September 2009

Links with home and wedding belles! I had dinner at the home of some friends this weekend and met a lovely couple, Andy and Catherine, who had married this summer so still offically classed as newly weds! Andy is in the army and currently posted in the UK but has been in Iraq and told me how listening to The Archers is an important link with home whilst overseas. He had a very colourful idea for a T shirt slogan which I won't print here! Amazing how our little world of Ambridge goes all around the world and has such significance. Talking of newly weds we have cause to celebrate here at AAHQ this week as our own lovely Kate is getting married this Saturday - so we are in a very excited mood here. I expect there will be confetti and corks popping in the office before the week is out! Kate promises me that her taste in dresses is very different to that of the 'explosion in a meringue factory' worn by the recently wed Vicky in Ambridge - what an image! Happy times! JEN

Hot off the press! - 17 September 2009

Hot off the press! Hello lovely listeners, sorry I've been away for a while but we've been busy busy busy here at AA HQ. The next issue of The Ambridge Voice has just come into the office and we think you're going to like it. We get to grips with goings on at The Bull and go behind the scenes on some of our brand new books. Thanks for your great contributions and photos - the letters page looks fab. Now we're on to Christmas - I know it's a bit early but we need to plan ahead as we'd hate to disappoint you. Look out for the next brochure full of tempting goodies and in the meantime, happy listening! KT

Who's Who 2010 now in! - 16 September 2009

Who's Who 2010 now in! I can't believe that we haven't updated our blog for so long! It's a measure of how busy we've been. Mark you, I can't complain about my staff. Ann is so dedicated that she took our Royal Mail stamp home to give it a good wash so that it came up more clearly when printing it out on parcels. Don't follow suit as it doesn't work but I've put Ann on the brownie point list. The new Who's Who 2010 is now in with interesting new entries such as Vicky Tucker, Annette Turner, Pip's friend Izzy Blake, the cranky old Jim Lloyd and adhesive Wayne Tucson. All good fun. To all those people who ask me why Kathy hasn't been featured recently the answer is no, I haven't got a Hollywood contract, life threatening disease or a new career. I'd love a part in Smallville or Neighbours but meantime I'm hoping for a storyline before I keel over. It's going to be a literary Christmas this year with all these new books and I'm amazed at the number of you buying in advance. Don't stop! HN

Plums, plums everywhere! - 02 September 2009

Plums, plums everywhere! Set up a small stand in Pershore Market Square, watch the world go by and wait for it to come to you. Usual fascinating little stories and connections with The Archers. A chap from St John Ambulance and his wife remembered when Kathy was in St John Ambulance and I went over to Worcester to learn about the 'breath of life'. I scored 65% so don't depend on me if you're about to meet your Maker. I didn't have time to change and drove home in full uniform along the back routes. To my horror I passed a house with an ambulance alongside the front door and was terrified someone would come out and ask for my help! The same gentleman showed me Godfrey Baseley's watch that he'd bought in a Charity Auction. Someone else told me that her cousin's children play Freddie and Lily Pargetter, and someone else had been taught by Gwen Berryman's sister. Another lady showed me an autographed memento of The Archers twenty fifth anniversary. I love these contacts with what goes on behind the scenes, and the way the stories and the memorabilia are cherished. I suppose now that's it's been going for so long the programme links us with our own past history. And Trevor was great and the plums were delicous. You can see the pics in the Gallery HN

Plums, plums everywhere! - 26 August 2009

Plums, plums everywhere! Once again we are preparing for an excursion out of the office to meet some more lovely fans! This time to Pershore in Worcestershire on Bank Holiday Monday (31st August) to the Pershore Plum Fayre! How fab to celebrate something so British and seasonal - very Ambridge. There are lots of things to do including Plum Festive Beer to sample, teddy bear races, classic cars to see, boat trips and a Farmers Market selling, of course, local plums! We will be there with 'Eddie' (Trevor Harrison) who is opening the whole day, and our trusty Addicts stall where you can see the new Archers Calendar, Diary, Address Book and Jennifer's Cookbook plus lots of other goodies to buy. 'Kathy' (Hedli Niklaus)has promised to come along as well, if the Golf Club can spare her. So once again we are busy packing up stock and even our wonderful bookeeper Tracy is helping by transporting stock to wildest Worcestershire for us. So now you know how we will be spending our Bank Holiday - for one day only in sunny (hopefully) Pershore! Hope to see you there and that you all have a great bank holiday where ever you are! JEN

James Mason, John Allison and my Mother! - 25 August 2009

James Mason, John Allison and my Mother! It's been a busy week and the cruise seems so long ago now! I saw a very young Timothy Bentinck in a film starring James Mason no less. Note to self - ask if James was nice or nasty. People of my generation will know all about James Mason, the silver tongued dastardly villain in many a movie and notable for Humbert Humbert in Lolita. I digress. I came back to a call from John Allison of the Allison brothers who nearly won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with a song called 'Are you sure?'. There's an extraordinary link between John and my mother which I shall be writing about in the Online Addicts pages when I've had a chance to talk to him! HN

Books and Calendars - all in! - 17 August 2009

Books and Calendars - all in! Lovely boxes have been arriving, crammed with copies of the new Diary, Address Book and Calendar. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to unwrap the sellophane and slip out the glossy cover of a new calendar , then go through it page by page seeing how everything fits together. The photographs are glorious this year and the montage with Jack and Peggy Woolleys pictures very touching. An extremely handsome pair now - but whizzes in their youth! I like the chunky feel of the Address Book, we've never had one before. Like everyone else I keep a lot of information on my phone and online but there's still nothing to match holding a book in your hand and the fragrance of new pages! I'd better go and lie down....HN

Listen Again - 14 August 2009

Listen Again Just listening to 'Listen Against' - hilarious! Bionic John Archer returned from the dead, the problem of running out of agricultural storylines and Kenton and Lizzie's take on Darth Vadar. If you have a spare moment you'll enjoy the fleeting archive moments if nothing else! Rachel Atkins is in it too. Funny thing - ever since Rachel's been playing Vicky I keep hearing her on the radio. HN

Back home! - 10 August 2009

Back home! Crumbs! From the sublime to the ridiculous. One minute sardines and wine in the sun, next minute sandwiches and tea in the rain! You can always rely on an English summer... All calm in the office although they've had a busy time eating Ann's cake and waiting for crunchy chutney. I'm hoping we get some pictures of the cruise from people we met on board ship and my technical whiz has to adapt the Gallery so that I can add captions, otherwise it will all be a bit confusing. I'll have to catch up with The Archers now; I know Vicky has her claws well and truly into Mike, and Matt's still looking over his shoulder but that's about it. I'm off to 'Listen Again' right now! HN

Blue skies in Lisbon - 08 August 2009

Blue skies in Lisbon We had a great day in Lisbon, blue seas, sunny skies, slight breeze, somehow found ourselves sitting outside in a cafe eating fresh grilled Portuguese sardines with those deliciously juicy beef tomatoes and yummy bread baked that day. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have days like that (and places to eat!) in Ambridge? Don't somehow think Jaxx caff is up to that. Our last session was hilarious with sound supervisor, Louise Willcox, shaking an umbrella and emitting strange cries to create the sound effect for Eccles the peacock. I'll ask Jo Toye (who wrote it) if I can post the mini ep on the Online pages when we get back. We've had a good time but I think we're ready for home. Richard (Kenton) and Buffy (Jolene)'s have spent a lot of time above decks swimming in the pool there and sun bathing. It's a most peculiar sensation, swimming in a pool in the middle of the sea! Just seen a couple of clouds. Must be getting close to home! Till then.....HN

Calendar on its way - 06 August 2009

Calendar on its way Well hello lovely listeners everywhere. What about Peggy's finances then hey; even the wealthy of Ambridge aren't safe from the bite of the credit crunch! Despite the crunch you lot are still keen to munch, judging by the way Jennifer's Cookbooks are still flying off the shelves. I'm impressed, but not surprised, that Ann has already started cooking her way through her edition. The Earl Grey Fruit Cake had caught my eye too, yum yum.

Well all is well here at Archers Addicts HQ, which is lucky really as the Boss is back from her Archers cruise next week. Let's just hope we can make it through today without a crisis and we'll be home safe and dry - like Hedli, assuming the Bay of Biscay isn't too choppy! I've just found out that we can expect the new Calendar 2010 to be delivered in a fortnight, and I can't wait to see the final thing - it's going to be gorgeous. Take care and happy listening! KT

Clarrie's Crunchy Chutney - 05 August 2009

Clarrie's Crunchy Chutney Hi Ann here, I've finally managed to break away from my packing desk to tell you about the lovely 'Earl Grey Fruit Cake' I made yesterday from the new Jennifer Aldridge's Archers' Cookbook. It was very easy to make but being me I had to do it my way, I soaked all the fruit and left the cherries whole and as I don't like walnuts I used pecans instead. It's wonderful and so moist, will take some to my mum who's ill at the moment, I'm sure it will make her feel better. I'm going to try 'Clarrie's Crunchy Chutney' next, sounds yummy and no need to cook! I'll report back and let you know how successful it is. AG

Captain's Table - 01 August 2009

Captain's Table We were honoured with an invitation to the Captain's cabin for drinks before dinner at his table. We felt as if we were in an Agatha Christie novel as music started to play as we went up the plush staircase to his cabin. There was Joanna Toye, her husband John, Leon and myself - together with a rather exotic Cuban couple, the tours operator and her Grandpa. Which one of us would be the victim, which the murderer?! The Captain was charming and full of jokes. When I get back I'll put up the picture of all of us in the Gallery. Marseille today -boiling hot! Sorry.....HN

Manning the fort - 30 July 2009

Manning the fort Well I am quite jealous of Hedli, swanning around in the sunshine while we're all here in Blighty manning the fort in the rain - what happened to our lovely Summer? Still, I have high hopes the sunshine will return and we'll have a lovely Autumn.

Meanwhile, as Jennie said, the Cookbooks are flying off the shelves and I'm left wondering whether we've ordered enough! I spoke with Angela Piper today (Jennifer Aldridge) about the work it took to create the book; she had a lot of input in the design and was keen to give it an Ambridge feel. I asked her lots of questions and shall reveal the answers in the next newsletter so members, watch this space! As for non members - you had better join the fan club quick or you'll miss out! Don't forget to email me at kate@archers-addicts.com if you have a comments or questions for the next issue. Happy listening! KT

Poor Richard - sea-sick! - 29 July 2009

Poor Richard - sea-sick! We've just done our first session on board the Balmoral. Lots of people came, which is always a relief and already I've met someone whose son went to school with Trevor Harrison (Eddie)! It's a small world. Poor Richard (Kenton) was sea-sick but is better now. He and Buffy (Jolene) have brought their families and the children are fantastic. We have a diminutive Harry Potter, a Hermione in the making, and a cross between Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. You can tell they are actors' children! At the moment we're bathed in warm sunlight on our way to Malaga. This afternoon we're rehearsing our volunteers for the Soap Bubble Jo Toye has written for the event, then it's dinner, line dancing, watching a magician, doing the 10pm quiz and then to bed. I know. It's a hard life but someone has to do it. Rather like the lectures on the Titanic, destruction and aftermath, and the lecture on the face lift without the life part. Only hope you recognise me when I get back! HN

Earl Grey Fruit Cake - 29 July 2009

Earl Grey Fruit Cake We've just taken delivery of Jennifer Aldridge's Archers Cookbook from the publishers so it is all systems go here to get them dispatched as we have been swamped with all your orders! The offical publication date is Friday so the first few should arrive by then. We are thrilled with the book and Angela Piper (Jennifer Aldridge) has done a fantastic job. The presentation of the book is much like the folder of recipes, tips and cuttings we all keep at home but what makes it extra special is 'Jennifer's' own jottings and memories of Ambridge for each month of the year, all beautifully illustrated. We have all bought one here in the office (Ann has her heart set on making the Earl Grey Fruit Cake - sounds yummy) and I am already planning to buy more for Christmas presents. I can't quite believe I am thinking about that yet but with the weather more like November than July it seems quite logical! Meanwhile, Hedli is cruising around the Mediterranean in the sun, no doubt, with Kenton (Richard Attlee) and Jolene (Buffy Davies) which sounds like quite a hoot! Although what the Bull and Jaxx Cafe are doing without them who knows! I'm sure all The Archers fans on board are having a real treat! Oh well back to the packing.....
Jennie

Nearly off - 23 July 2009

Nearly off Nothing like rain to make me think of blogging. We're off on The Archers cruise on Sunday so I'm tidying up in the office as well as trying to pack. Richard (Kenton) will be on board with his family and I'm looking forward to meeting his children. We're still trying to plan a celebration in the Midlands next year. The first episode of The Archers was piloted in the Midlands only, on the Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday in 1950. We can't let that pass by without notice. If any of you out there have some ideas please let me know! Recording Feedback was hilarious - it took a good hour of general chat out of which two minutes was used, and that was just me. Louise, the producer, must have done the same with Mary and Vanessa. I like the slow burn storylines like the Alzheimer's and the Lilian and Matt epic. There's a reaction everytime we hear 'Jack' and 'Peggy' as it touches people going through the same thing in real life. HN

Lovely listeners - 14 July 2009

Lovely listeners Hello lovely listeners! It's a rainy day here at Archers Addicts HQ, but we're not down in the dumps. We're busy sorting orders and are currently commisioning a new colourful tea-towel and mug, so watch this space! We are also considering possible options for a convention in 2011 which would give people the chance to meet actors and members of the production team and generally have a great day out. Meanwhile, Hedli is busy preparing for the next cruise which departs on the 26th July. I've just printed out scripts for the special episode they're performing on board written by Joanna Toye. We can't wait for Jo's Archers Miscellany to be published (due in September) as it promises to be a great read; a real mixture of fun, facts and brilliant Archers memories. Anyway, we've got to get thinking about the next issue of The Ambridge Voice; any ideas or stories, do email me at kate@archers-addicts.com - I look forwad to hearing from you! Happy listening...

Getting cooking - 07 July 2009

Getting cooking This week has been very busy in the Addicts office. It seems that the change in weather has meant you are all at home (or work) busy surfing the web or reading your Ambridge Voice and as a result we have had none stop orders coming in! Particuarly for the new Jennifer Aldridge's Ambridge Cookbook which is due to be published on 30th July. It's ages since we had a lovely new book especially a cook book which makes such a great gift as well, so I am sure some of these orders are for early Christmas presents - what a thought the week after Wimbledon! Anyway it has been great to talk to so many of you who have rung with pre orders. Oh well back to processing the orders... JE

Great read - 06 July 2009

Great read People have got their Ambridge Voice and are ordering Angie Piper's new Cookbook. I like the flurry of activity after the paper goes out. I've also been reading an advance copy of Jo Toye's 'Miscellany' which is coming out in the Autumn (also hardback and £9.99). It's a charming read - flags up memories and does what the 'Book of The Archers' did, reminds you of all the small activities that make up village life over decades. I'm loving it! HN
